Teen to be tried as an adult in shootings
A 17-year-old Oxnard suspect will be tried as an adult in the May shooting of two Nyeland Acres teens, authorities said Thursday.
Baltazar Islas was charged Wednesday with street terrorism and assault with a firearm, the Sheriff's Department reported.
Authorities said a vehicle with at least two people drove to the 3400 block of Orange Drive in Nyeland Acres on May 20 and stopped in front of a group of juveniles playing basketball in a private driveway. Someone got out of the vehicle and fired two rounds from a shotgun, hitting two juveniles, authorities said. The two were treated at a hospital and released.
Sheriff's investigators later linked Islas to the shootings and found a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition at his home, authorities said. He was arrested July 11, they said.

Good!
Hope his parents are full of shame!

Why is it that in this case, the authorities had a shooting in May, had to find the perp, then charge him in court, and all this took place by July. Brandon McInerny shot a classmate in front of over 20 witnesses, was immediately apprehended, there is no doubt he is guilty, and this took place in February, It is now July and he has still not been charged. How difficult is this?
Posted by Ms_California on July 18, 2008 at 6:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)
steveb... you can thank McInerny's lawyers for that delay. They keep asking for extensions to gather information and speak with people. I find it hard to believe that the judge would allow this but again it is our wonderful judical system.
I am happy though that no one was seriously injured by this idiot. At 17 years old, Islas was just begining his life and now he will begin it in jail. How sad. What proud parents he must have.

Yes, once they caught this guy, it was pretty much cut and dry. With Mcinerny, they are still going back and forth with the teen vs adult thing. It doesn't make any sence. Hwo long will they drag this out?
Posted by lhernandez on July 18, 2008 at 6:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Well at least they caught the guy how many shootings and crimes go on with out any suspects...I think any juvenile that picks up a gun should be charge as an adult. You want to act like a man take the punishment like a man!!!

Good - glad they caught him and he's going to pay for his crime.
Exactly lhernandez -
- how many times do people get away with this crap? I just logged in to VCS just now, (so I dont know if this story has been updated) but...........I'm still waiting to see who the heck ran over that guy on the bike yesterday in Hueneme!?!? Too many people get away with too much - and it's nice to see justice served!!!

since when does 'acting like a man' mean shooting a person?

everyon needs to stop blamimg the parents.. Those poor people probably feel horrible... The guy is 17 soon to be 18 and after that there is nothin that the parents can do. Kids at that age to what they want no matter what the parents say or do.. They know right from wrong.....
Posted by 805m0mma on July 18, 2008 at 8:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I blame the parents to an extent, if their kids respected them they may not be doing this kind of BS...the parents need to be the authority in the household and I'm sure these kids run the show. kim1324-"kids know right from wrong"-but as a parent if you put fear in your kid they will know NOT to do wrong because they will be afraid of what their parents are going to think. I was not the prefect kid nor am I the perfect parent but when I was young I knew NOT to do something that was going to disappoint my parents because I respected them.

I wonder if the parents were illegal aliens because there have been a lot of chinese and far east gangs coming through the Mexican border and this is normal self defense where tehycome from. Singleing the kid out for arrest might be considered racist in their eyes because nobody was killed. Maybe someone should call the ACLU and get this poor kid a lawyer because he might not really even understand the culture.

Yeah Arnold
The "poor kid" needs a lawyer.......whatever. Poor kid............ Can use his public defender to get him out of this mess, you dont just go around shooting people.....poor kid. Sounds like it was a planned thing to me - pulling up to a private driveway and firing rounds? Uhh....screw their "culture" they are here now, so if they want to play by American rules, then they pay!!!

Funny how things are portrayed....my family lives on this street and the juveniles that were shot may have been standing near a basketball court, but they are no athletes. Believe me! Try to drive down Orange Dr without the "basketball players" at the end of the block throwing signs or staring you down. Sometimes they won't even get out of the freakin way so people can get by!

Good to know nolonger805 -
I didnt realize that. So they were just "hanging out" in the driveway - It's funny how people post on here and tell the real truth....the newspaper (or online newspaper) has to keep it word for word for their accountablity.

nolonger805...very interesting insight! Yeah, usually these kinds of things happen for a reason. Not that it's a good reason to most of us, but in the youth gangster world, it doesn't take much.
Okay, 17 is much closer to 18 than 14 so I get why this bozo is being tried as an adult. In regards to Brandon...I'm somewhat torn but more leaning towards him being tried as an adult too. Simply because he planned his crime and knew exactly what he was doing.
Youth violence is way out of control.

Agreed again Beahappi- You have very good points. Youth violence is out of control, and I'm not a big "parent blamer" but man, I have to say in this case, where were the parents?!?!?
With the Brandon case- I am also torn, but, he did plan it, and he did do it, so I think that maybe not be tried as an adult, but not tried as a 14 year old, too bad there is not a middle ground......Everyone says "do the crime, do the time" which is true, but a kid is not an adult, but they have commited a huge crime, whether adult or kid, it's still murder. That is unfortunate, because if his mind is still that of a child, he has to pay for what he did - and that's sad. Prayers to all involved - What a mess vta county is turning into

good...
however, who else still wonders about the fate of the young man who hired his friends to stage a robbery and beat his pregnant girlfriend in order for her to lose her baby? Remember that? He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder on two counts. Star? Follow up story? This was big news!

I remember that story, jbess805. I too, wonder whatever happened to that idiot.

I still blame the parents ..
"Raise up a child in the way he should, and when he is old, he will not depart from it"-KJV.
Look at the back ground of all this kids...and the family life ( See Columbine)...
As BeaHippi said, this has got to stop.

nolonger805...I shall drive down Orange St. today....and if they don't get out of my way and start staring and throwing up signs, I shall mow them down with my car, back up, and run them over again. A couple less 'unsavory characters' we'd have to worry about!

What kind of level headed, mature young adult loads a shotgun into his car and goes driving around looking for someone to shoot? This kid should be tried as an adult, for the adult planning processes he used. If there were a way to make it happen, I would suggest retroactive abortion for this guy, and all others of similar mindset. Who needs 'em?

iluvsp - run them over again once for me!?! :-) Kidding.
I just think it's amazing how many times I log into this site and see there was another youth stabbing, another shooting, another fight, or another teen car accident.
I wish there was something we could do besides sit here and talk about it.

imonlysayin:
in response to "I wish there was something we could do besides sit here and talk about it."
I just returned from attending a church named Victory Outreach. This church reaches out nonstop to those youngsters, like the ones mentioned here, with Jesus Christ. These kids don't know about God, since the bible is outlawed in schools, and most don't go to church, they walk around without spiritual guidance or a "higher power" to lead them.
Without goals, mentors or a reason to live these kids are taken in by every available evil in sight.
It takes a lot of love to work with these kids, who, if not changed will eventually die an awful death.
Its true, "he that lives by the sword, dies by the sword."
However, this biblical truth doesn't have to be; I want them to live, and live abundantly. If you feel you have the answer its time to start working, putting your hands to the plow, and help out this church. I go here because I know Victory Outreach is in the trenches, the United States of America trenches, doing warfare for human lives.
I help with Children's classrooms, pray for people, whatever I can do, I do. I know how it feels to: "wish there was something we could do besides sit here and talk about it."

Parents full of shame – put them behind bars
Pay for his crime? Highly doubt it. Put the parents behind bars, chain gang the shooter, downsize San Quintin death row. Put some in iraq, although they don’t deserve to serve this country either.
Where’s the justice for the tax payers, I want to see our tax dollars go to work.
Don’t blame the parents? Heck, they need to grieve their loss too.
Blame parents to an extent – don’t complain when we’re in a recession or depression.
It’s persons like you that I fear when voting time comes around.
Illegal or not, border or no border, crime does not come in color.
Convict as an adult, he used a friggen gun, and they are found in the homes.
Child or no child age limit, we need to start somewhere. Let the punishment fit the crime at any age.
Chances are the parent did want to abort.
Yeah, those kids should have been in church Saturday and Sunday.
Take the city, age, color out of the equation, and take our concerns where it really counts!
(summed up)
