Head on up to the attic, dust off that old musical instrument you haven't picked up in years and think about giving it a future.

Or grab that old instrument from the corner of your room, the one you have loved but outgrown, and give yourself the gift of a new one. Then, on your way out to the music store, stop and give your old instrument new life.

Your simple act will quite literally be music to someone's ears.

Just ask the folks at Ventura's City Corps and Peace Thru Music, both nonprofit organizations, who are collaborating on a musical instrument drive that runs through next week.

Between 1 and 5 p.m. weekdays, people can take their old, used musical instruments to the City Corps office at 77 N. California St.

City Corps will accept all wind, string and brass instruments as well as drums and electric pianos.

The musical instrument drive will end with a flourish on July 26, the same day Oscar-winning actor Kevin Costner comes to Ventura to premiere his new movie, "Swing Vote," which opens to the public on Aug. 1.

Costner, an alum of Buena High in Ventura, will return to the city on July 26 to attend a movie premiere event and to present a free concert that night featuring his country rock band, Kevin Costner and Modern West.

City Corps and Peace Thru Music have come together to take advantage of the party atmosphere by throwing "Concert on the Curb," an adjunct fete, as it were, to the big Costner event.

City Corps will operate a barbecue hamburger and hot dog booth on California Street, by its office, from noon to 7 p.m. July 26, and it also will hold a raffle for two guitars signed by Costner.

In addition, City Corps youth members will help with VIP parking and seating for the Costner event. A first aid station will be set up in the City Corps office.

Peace Thru Music has secured a number of local bands to perform during the afternoon event.

The lineup is:

1 p.m.: J.T. & Wendy Lee.

2 p.m.: Brion Shearer.

3 p.m.: Divine Crime.

4 p.m.: Fido.

5 p.m.: The Situation.

6 p.m.: Shades of Day.
