Leary sails Pangea to Ingram victory

Mike Leary skippered Pangea to overall victory Saturday in the 39-boat, 42-mile Milt Ingram Race.

Leary's J-30 won spinnaker class C and the Milt Ingram Trophy for the fleet's best corrected time. Other big winners in the race hosted by Pierpont Bay Yacht Club were:

n Alex Blankfield's Santa Cruz 50, Deception, won the spinnaker A class.

n PK Edwards' Catalina 42, Wind Dancer, won spinnaker B.

n Dennis West's Beneteau 44, West Wing, won non-spinnaker D.

n Brent Swanson's Islander 29, Velero, won non-spinnaker E.

n Chuck Lennox won the cruising class in his Cal 34, Second Fiddle.

n Colin Gegg's Indefatigable won the multihull class.

n Mike Dobbs won the beach cat class in Full Tilt.

n Bill Gibbs' 52-foot catamaran, Afterburner, was the fastest boat on the water — sailing the course in 6 hours, 47 minutes, 3 seconds while winning the Craig Ashby Memorial Trophy.

n Jim Dembowski won the Mates' Trophy for top double-handed boat aboard his Moore 24, Eclipse.

n Cherri Taylor won the Woman Skipper Trophy aboard Maine Squeeze, a Schock 35. The race was around oil rig Grace and then around Anacapa Island, finishing at Ventura Harbor.

The race started in light northwest winds, rather than the forecasted southwesterly direction. The wind decreased such that the first boats didn't round platform Grace until after 3 p.m. For safety reasons, the course was shortened for the beach catamarans so they would not be out after dark. The wind continued to build after about 6 p.m. with the last boats having a fast ride back to the finish in 12 to 15 knots of breeze.

Race officials reported a distress call came from Mike Warns' Santa Cruz 50, Fifty One Fifty, because a crew member bruised his ribs and suffered a knee cut which required 12 stitches. The Ventura harbor master dispatched a boat with a medic aboard to take care of the emergency and Fifty One Fifty retired from the race.

Because of the light winds in the early stages, the going was slow. The fastest monohull, Prevail, a Santa Cruz 52, took 8:41:21 to complete the course. The slowest boat, winning the Endurance Trophy was Menagerie, a Liberty 45, which took 14:03:41 to go the 42 miles.
