LAFCO says Fillmore-Piru district needs some time
The Ventura Local Agency Formation Commission decided Wednesday to recommend a "wait and see" approach to the Fillmore-Piru Memorial District following a Ventura County Grand Jury investigation into the nearly 60-year-old organization. The Grand Jury recommended the organization be reorganized into a subsidiary district of the city of Fillmore.
LAFCO members unanimously voted to approve a response to the Grand Jury that urged the district be permitted to fix some of the problems the Grand Jury, and previously LAFCO, had found in the organization.
The district should hold elections in 2010 instead of appointing board members, and members should undergo the ethics training required by law, said LAFCO, which will re-examine the district by 2013.
The city of Fillmore has expressed its position that the district remain as is. The district owns and operates the Veterans Memorial Building in Fillmore, one of the larger venues in the city.
