The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District board of directors tonight will consider taking an initial step in improving a popular golf course in Simi Valley.

The Park District staff is recommending the board approve an agreement with Graves & Pascuzzo Golf Course Architects Inc. to provide design consultation for the Simi Hills Golf Course, at 5031 Alamo St.

Ed Hayduk, assistant general manager for the Park District, said the staff is recommending the consultation on the 27-year-old course because its infrastructure, particularly the irrigation system, is in "dire need of upgrading."

"Breakdowns in irrigation of the course are frequent, and inconsistent irrigation coverage greatly impacts playability of the course," said Hayduk in an interoffice memorandum to the board.

Hayduk said the staff believes water-saving measures should be considered now since the district will be facing increased costs for water and increased pressure to decrease water use. He said there is potential to secure public grant funds to help pay for a retrofit of the irrigation system.

In addition to providing information on how to reduce water consumption at the course, the study, if approved, would also give recommendations on improving playability of the golf course, golf course drainage and cart path systems, pace of play on the course, and recommendations on safety upgrades regarding how golf balls affect adjacent roads and homes.

A design workshop will be scheduled to solicit ideas and suggestions.

Funds for the $21,700 study are included in the district's approved fiscal year 2008-09 preliminary budget.

The board will meet at 7 tonight at Oak Park Community Center & Gardens, 1000 N. Kanan Road, Oak Park.
