68,000 pot plants found in Los Padres forest
Authorities seized more than 68,000 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $306 million during two eradication operations this week in the Los Padres National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday.
The marijuana farms were discovered during aerial reconnaissance missions by the Ventura and Kern County sheriff's departments, said Kathy Good, a Forest Service spokeswoman. The discoveries were not connected to recent fires in the Los Padres forest.
An operation with more than 14,000 plants was dismantled in Ventura County on Tuesday, following the seizure of an estimated 54,000 plants in Kern County on Monday.
During the past decade, an average of 30,000 to 40,000 pot plants have been found in the national forest each year, Good said. "This was a pretty big haul."
About 40 officers from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Forest Service and state Department of Parks and Recreation removed plants Tuesday from plots in the remote Gold Hill area near Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, according to the Forest Service.
Two men from Los Angeles County were arrested Friday during a food drop, in which food and other essentials were taken to people working in the gardens, authorities said.
Detectives arrested Alejandro Anguiano, 35, of Alhambra, and Jorge Lucatero, 28, of Pico Rivera, on suspicion of conspiracy to cultivate marijuana. Both men were held Wednesday at Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula. Anguiano was ineligible for bail because of an immigration hold listing him in an alleged illegal entry. Lucatero's bail was set at $100,000.
The camp was abandoned when authorities arrived Tuesday. Officers found camp sites, irrigation systems and ammunition in the area. The ammunition included rounds for AK-47 assault rifles, shotguns and .357-caliber handguns, but authorities did not find any weapons, sheriff's Sgt. Pat MacAuley said.
The marijuana plants were loaded onto helicopters and probably will be burned in Camarillo, authorities said.
On Monday, authorities removed an estimated 54,000 marijuana plants from plots along Santiago Creek near Cerro Noroeste Road in Kern County. Combined with the Ventura County plants, the pot had a potential street value of $306 million, according to authorities.
About 40 officers from the Forest Service, Kern County Sheriff's Department, Federal High Intensity Drug Area Task Force, state Department of Fish and Game and the California Department of Justice's Campaign Against Marijuana Planting participated in Monday's operation.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Department participated in roughly 20 marijuana seizures last year but none this large, MacAuley said. Most marijuana plots are well camouflaged, but this one was easy to spot from the air, he said.
"It wasn't camouflaged well at all," said MacAuley, leading him to believe the growers were "either very bold or very stupid."
In fact, deputies raided the same site last year, he said. Marijuana growers routinely return to the same spots in the national forest because they need south- or west-facing areas near water sources, but they usually wait two to four years, MacAuley said.
In Kern County, officers found camp sites, irrigation systems, fertilizer, trash and propane tanks in the area, the Forest Service reported. Large areas of native shrubs and trees had been destroyed to make room for the plants.
Environmental damage is a hallmark of marijuana farms. Growers typically surround their plots with rat poison, use streams as toilets and dump trash in barrancas, MacAuley said.
"What they do to the environment is totally amazing," he said.

G'd morning Hueneme_girl & Junior ;)
Just curious, where specifically in Camarillo will these "plants" be burned?
Posted by omie on July 17, 2008 at 8:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Where in Camarillo? I would like to witness the destruction of this contraband, but instead we could bring in millions if we legalized and taxed it. Wait hasn't that been done already "phillip morris". Just sell what they confiscated to piss off the growers, apply the money earned towards more beneficial programs. State recognizes medical pot right?

We can't have people smoking pot and getting mellow! THAT WOULD BE WRONG!!!!!!! Come on folks, lets go to the bar and get hammered the legal way!
Lame pot busts waste taxpayer $$

"The only reason Marijuana is illegal, is because the Government can't regulate and tax it."
Amen to that Junior! But seriously, how hard could it be? We manage to tax and regulate so many other things. Let's get off the fence and make this happen already. And no, I don't imbibe!
On another note, several years ago someone told me that the "pot busts" up in this area were actually pot farms planted by authorities, so that they could have the "big wins" of major pot busts. Okay, okay...conspiracy theory I know, but I'm curious to see if anyone else ever heard the same thing.

Camarillo Airport to the West end is the Bomb Squad bunker, they've done burns there before. With that quantity though, gonna need a hot big fire so it's not all smoky :-)
Wouldn't do to have pilots on final suddenly develop munchies and land at In N Out.

Heck, if these two guys were able to maintain this many plants (assuming it was just them) and keep it hidden this long, imagine what the government could do with legalizing it, taxing it and so on. All of our state budget issues would be gone, our schools would have plenty of money...heck, it might even go back to the ol' days when the schools provided paper and pencils and parents didn't get a 4 page supply list at the beginning of each year totaling about $250 per child.
Ok, Ok, I admit, that was day dreaming, I must be down wind...

Posted by BeaHappi on July 17, 2008 at 8:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)
hotwildflower - no kidding! There is so much $$ to be made off of the legal cultivating and selling of marijuana. Not to mention the costs saved by people NOT being arrested for pot possession, not going to trial for possession/selling, etc. etc.

ebrockway...who cares about the illegal alien? He was doing the Lord's work! :~)
Posted by hotwildflower on July 17, 2008 at 8:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)
RACIST! I'll be the 1st to throw that word out there.
Honestly, I don't get why we don't just legalize this and reap the benefits of the the excess taxes. No one kills for weed (unless it's 68,000 plants, then they might) people aren't out smoking and driving and killing people like with legalized alcohol.
I personally don't smoke, no one in my family does and I would strongly encourage my children to never pick up the habit, but I tell them the same thing about alcohol. Anything that impairs judgement and used in excess is dangerous.

Alhough I totally agree with the legalization... hotwildflower you are incorrect about the whole smokin and drivin theroy.Back in the day,I burned many a blunts as well as my circle. Many people in my circle luved to smoke and drive. They claimed to drive better that way.I am much older now,but I can still relate to the pot head and I know there has got to be a stoner out there with the same idea regarding driving.BTW there have been a few accidents reported were pot was involved. Not as many as alcohol though.
Posted by hotwildflower on July 17, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)
shuldbworkin805, I think I may need an interpreter to get what you are saying, but from what I understand...I think we are in agreement.
Posted by shuldbworkin805 on July 17, 2008 at 9:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Allow me to simplify.People DO smoke and drive. I know of a few accidents due to this. I use to Smoke pot. I don't anymore but can definetly appreciate the stoner mentality,as well as the smell...taste.... Takin me back now.
Posted by hotwildflower on July 17, 2008 at 9:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I can assure you, I would never encourage or allow anyone to smoke and drive, I believe the same laws of not drinking & driving should apply, whether or not someone follows them...well, we know how that goes.
I just think the number of deaths related to drinking and driving is much greater, not saying that driving impaired is EVER ok.
Posted by shuldbworkin805 on July 17, 2008 at 9:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Then we ARE in agreement.I feel alcohol is WAY worse than pot however,I recognize that they both are a drug and would not encourage my daughter to pick up either.

hotwildflower i totally agree, u should not smoke and drive i dont know how people can even do it. i used to smoke and i couldnt imagine drving while being all stuck on stupid.

I agree Hotwildflower. I too was a past pot smoker and I hated even being in the car while I was under the influence. If you can't control your urge to eat continually or keep from falling asleep how can you have full control behind the wheel? Just say NO!

I'm truly surprised to see this level of "legalize it" mentality coming from the residents of this county. It's nice to know the movement is everywhere. Legalize it, tax it, stop throwing non-violent good people in jail for it and ruining their lives. Focus on the real problems, the REAL drugs. Meth, coke, heroin, etc. Apply the same restrictions to pot as we have on alcohol and come down hard on the offenders (just like drunk driving).
Come on Arnold, it's the solution to California's budget crisis!

Reminds me of that scene in Mel Brooks' History of the World Part I movie where Gregory Hines makes a giant reefer and lets the smoke billow out the back of the horse-drawn carriage to enfeeble the pursuing Roman army. Result: Mel Brooks, Gregory HInes, and company get away.
Marijuana is enfeebling. I work with kids--kids can't learn much when they smoke marijuana. It kills brain cells and drive and initiative. Good bust!

I don't think active legalization of Marijuana will ever occur, just as legalization of Papaver somniferum and Erythroxylum coca will never happen: you can't effectively regulate and tax an easily cultivated plant (recall that the first two are naturalized in California).
Large plantations would disappear under legalization, backyard farmers would abound.
At the same time, of course it should be legalized. I haven't smoked the stuff in more than ten years. It's about 8:00am now, I'll bet anyone $100 that I could score a dime bag before lunchtime. The only thing the War on Drugs has accomplished is to make the habit relatively expensive.
Eventually I think enforcement will be given up on providing de facto legalization (as well as leaving another rarely enforced law on the books to nail you with if they don't have anything else).
