The 109th SCGA Amateur Championship, the nation's second oldest continuously contested amateur golf championship, tees off on Friday at Saticoy Country Club, the home club of SCGA president Bob Lowe.

A field of 84 golfers will play 36 holes on Friday, with players teeing off at 7:20 a.m. and 1 p.m. The field will be trimmed to the low 42 scorers and ties after the second round. The third round will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday and the final round will begin at the same time on Sunday.

Defending champion Brett Kanda of La Crescenta, three-time champion Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes and 2008 California Amateur champion Nick Delio of Valencia are among the players in the field.

Local competitors in the field include Westlake High senior Marshall Colby, Channel Islands Sharks player-coach Wayne Merich, former Rio Mesa standout Ramie Sprinkling, former Moorpark College player Bryan Martin and Oak Park's Alex Kang.

Kanda, a 21-year-old sophomore at UNLV, is bidding to become just the seventh player ever to win back-to-back titles.

While it is the first time in the history of the SCGA Amateur that it will be held in Ventura County, there have been several county winners.

A year after Tiger Woods won the 1994 title, former Westlake High standout Charlie Wi took home the trophy, shooting a 280 at Santa Ana Country Club. Oxnard native Paul Stankowski won it in 1989 and former Royal High standout Roy Moon won the title in 2003 while a student at UCLA.

Oak Park resident Craig Steinberg is one of only two players who have won the title four times. Steinberg captured the tournament in 1988, 1991, 1992 and 1997.

The event is open to the public at no charge.

Lowe, whose presidency is responsible for the tournament coming to the county, is excited about the opportunity.

"I am so thrilled to be able to show everyone what a tremendous club and golf course we have here at Saticoy," Lowe said.

Scholarship winner: The Buenaventura Senior Men's Golf Club has chosen Camarillo High's Tamra Aslan as its 2008 Scholarship winner. Aslan was in the top 10 percent of her class and also played on the golf team as a freshman. She received a $1,000 award, which she can use to attend Cal Poly Pomona. She plans to study architecture.

Hole-in-one report: Kevin Pawloski aced the 171-yard sixth hole at Los Robles Golf Course using a 7-iron. It was witnessed by Patti Pawloski and Randy Knight.

Jack Rodeawald made a hole in one on the 120-yard eighth hole at Los Robles using an 8-iron. It was witnessed by Susan Huberman, Chris Fidyck and William Greenburg.
