Missing man, 85, found in Duarte

An elderly Thousand Oaks man reported missing Saturday was found the next day at a motel in Duarte, authorities said Tuesday.

A motel employee early Monday called John Stipec Jr.'s daughter to say her 85-year-old father was at the motel and wanted to be picked up, Ventura County Sheriff's Department Detective Eric Buschow said.

Stipec was unharmed, Buschow said.

The man had threatened to take his own life before leaving home and had recently exhibited signs of dementia, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Located near Monrovia, Duarte is about 59 miles from Thousand Oaks. Stipec reportedly left Thousand Oaks in a pickup truck Saturday without taking his blood pressure medication.

Well, thank goodness he was found. And, he didnt make it to San Fran like he planned. Isnt Monrovia in the opposite direction? Either way, happy ending to what could have been a horrible story.

Happy ending indeed. Now, if the family can only keep a close eye on him.

Not sure, I know where Monrovia is, that's down the 134 and then some, but I dont know where Duarte is? I would assume south since Monrovia is? either way, he didnt make it to San Fran!

Duarte is off the 210 before you get to Monrovia. The only way I know I'm going through there is there's a big car dealership and an Old Spaghetti Factory that you can see from the freeway. That's Duarte.

I'm glad they found him safe. I hope he's able to get some help for his problems.

How are we supposed to know when the ice cream man is coming? I dont have kids, but man, my hubbys ears pop up when he hears that song, and he rushes to his wallet and runs outside! What a nerd...

Duarte is also where City of Hope Cancer Center is located. I believe it is in the San Gabriel Valley area.

I'm so glad they found him! Poor guy...getting old can be very tough. These are people who at one time were the providers for their families, had jobs, took care of themselves and then slowly but surely they lose their independence.

Dementia is a horrible, horrible thing. Very scary for the person who has it and very trying and exhausting for the family.

<tangent> I LOVE the Old Spaghetti Factory in Duarte!

A relief that this senior gentleman has been located. Caring for the elderly can be very problematical. Perhaps, if individuals need it, we need more senior care centers to keep them occupied if the children cannot/will not provide the oversight that they require.
