Fair to start accepting contest submissions
On Friday, the Ventura County Fairgrounds will begin filling up with jams, table settings, photographs, homegrown fruits and vegetables, sculptures, homemade wines and beers, aquariums, gems and minerals, rabbits and sheep.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, many fair departments will be accepting entries for the 2008 event, which will be held from July 30 to Aug. 10. Departments accepting entries include Amateur Fine Arts, Hobbies, Models & Collections, Home Arts (Arts & Crafts, Clothing & Textiles, Preserved Foods, Special Exhibits), Professional Arts, Uncle Leo's Barn agriculture contest and Youth Expo & 4-H/Grange.
Winners are eligible for trophies, ribbons and more than $175,000 in cash awards.

Now if they'd just get people to do fair and honest judging.... I stopped entering years ago, and have watched as the judges allow kids to enter in the adult art catagory, and then let them win, even though they don't belong there, nor win by the criteria. BS. That's why there's a kids catergory (happens in a lot of divisions). Some of the stuff that wins is truly awful, and I have an art background. I've seen many a 3rd place that outdoes the 1st. Plus, I don't enjoy getting my stuff back with dented up frames because they lean them against each other on the floor when they accept them. Many friends agree and also do not enter anymore. Sad, as I used to like to enter...
