Santoro defeats Spadea to reach Hall of Fame final
Defending champion Fab-rice Santoro advanced to the final of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships by beating Vince Spadea 7-6 (4), 6-1 at Newport, R.I.
The matchup between the 35-year-old Santoro and 33-year-old Spadea was the oldest combined ages in a semifinal on tour since 1993, when 31-year old Brad Gilbert beat 40-year old Jimmy Connors in San Francisco.
Santoro, the second seed and oldest champion on Newport's grass courts in the 32-year history of the tourney, will face Prakash Amritraj today.
Amritraj, a wild-card entry, upset seventh-seeded Frank Dancevic of Canada 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
Top-seeded Wawrinka falls to Hanescu at Swiss Open: Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka lost to Victor Hanescu 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the Swiss Open semifinals at Gstaad, Switzerland.
Hanescu will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain or Igor Andreev of Russia in the final.
Garcia-Lopez and Andreev will continue today at one set each after the match was suspended due to rain.
Del Potro, Gasquet reach final: Juan Martin del Potro reached his first career ATP final, defeating Argentine compatriot Eduardo Schwank 6-2, 6-4 in the Mercedes Cup at Stuttgart, Germany.
Richard Gasquet, seeded second and the highest-ranked player at No. 15, overcame Agustin Calleri, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3 to reach today's final against del Potro.
Berdych reaches Swedish Open final: Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic reached his second Swedish Open final in three years, rallying past second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at Bastad, Sweden.
Tommy Robredo also came from behind, outlasting defending champion David Ferrer 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the all-Spanish semifinal.
Cornet, Klepac in Budapest GP final: Alize Cornet of France defeated Greta Arn of Hungary 6-1, 6-1 in 100-degree temperatures at the Budapest (Hungary) Grand Prix to gain today's final against Andreja Klepac of Slovenia.
Klepac also handled the heat in outlasting Karolina Sprem of Croatia 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Medina Garrigues, Pennetta upset: Four-time champion Anabel Medina Garrigues and top-seeded Flavia Pennetta were ousted in straight sets in the semifinals of the Palermo International at Palermo, Sicily.
Second-seeded Medina Garrigues, the champion in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006, fell to No. 7-seeded Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine 6-2, 6-2.
