"Shanghai City Guide" (Lonely Planet, $19.99)
Shanghai, a city of some 17 million inhabitants, has a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde complex going on: sci-fi-like, uber-modern skylines (epitomized by the Oriental Pearl TV tower) compete with traditional street markets and Chinese gardens, the newly rich sharing the same sidewalks with tattered-clothed beggars. Among other topics, the authors discuss Shanghai architecture, economic problems, the environment, and government and politics.
The book is organized according to neighborhoods, with descriptions of museums, temples and parks, shops, restaurants and nightlife, along with walking tours. A marvelous bonus feature is the eight-page, four-color Local Voices insert where local residents ranging in age from 32 to 51 express their often quite surprisingly candid views on the city.
