McConica finishes Anacapa 12.3-mile swim

Jim McConica of Ventura successfully completed the 12.3-mile swim on Thursday morning from Anacapa Island to Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard.

McConica finished in five minutes, 26 seconds, just seven minutes short of Scott Zornig's 2001 record of 5:19.

"The conditions were near perfect with little to no wind or swell, but a strong current slowed Jim's progress in the middle three hours," said Mike Shaffer, who assisted on the swim.

McConica started on record pace, but fell behind at the four-hour mark and could not make up the difference once the current had dimished.

McConica will compete in the U.S. Masters Swimming 25-kilometer national championships in Noblesville, Ind., on July 19.

BOWLING

Simi Valley's Bidwell ranks 32nd in event

Simi Valley's Devin Bidwell was 32nd in the 107-man field in the U.S. Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championship in Sterling Hills, Mich.

Bidwell had a score of 6,161 through 30 games as the tournament headed into match play.

WRESTLING

Camarillo High sends trio to nationals

Camarillo High's Jon Urango, Matt Hickman and Arthur Chivira have qualified for the Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D., July 18-26.

Urango was a fourth-place finisher in the California High School State Championship. Hickman is a state freestyle champion.

The wrestlers will attend a wrestling camp in San Jose starting Monday and then will head to North Dakota on July 17.

Urango, a senior, and Hickman, a sophomore, will compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Urango will wrestle at 160 pounds for freestyle and 152 for Greco-Roman. Hickman will wrestle at 152 pounds. Junior Chivira will compete in freestyle at 130 pounds.

FOOTBALL

Cal Lutheran to host LenDale White camp

The inaugural LenDale White Gridiron Football Camp and Autograph Signing will be held at Cal Lutheran on July 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration will start at 7 a.m.

Cost is $60. A T-shirt and lunch will be provided. An autograph session for non-campers will cost $20. Information: Craig Hertel 766-4125.

North Oxnard: The North Oxnard Warriors will have registration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Rusty's Pizza, 606 N. Ventura Road in Oxnard. The final registration session will be July 28 at the same time and location.

Moorpark College hosts grass tournaments

Moorpark College will host doubles grass volleyball tournaments on July 26 and Aug. 9 on the campus soccer field. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate.
