CAMARILLO

Merlin of Magic to perform at church

Paul Dwork, known as Merlin of Magic, will be appearing at the Camarillo United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday in the church sanctuary.

Dwork is well-known for his magic work and has been a magician for 39 years. He is a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood and the Magic Circle in England.

The show by the Camarillo magician is open to the public free of charge. A freewill offering will be taken.

NEWBURY PARK

Ministry to conduct parking lot sale

St. Julie's Helping Hands Ministry will conduct an indoor parking lot sale from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to noon Sunday at St. Julie's Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Road.

Featured will be gently used small appliances, baby items, clothes, books, jewelry and unique items.

Helping Hands Ministry was started 12 years ago by Sally Kutcher. The ministry has grown from a few ministers to 160 men and women who devote their time and energy to help those in need. Proceeds will be used to continue God's work.

Monthly speaker series to launch

The Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will launch its monthly speaker series, the CVUUF Community Forum, with social activist John Suarez from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the new home of Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist, 3331 Old Conejo Road.

Suarez will present the topic "Evolution, Creationism and Intelligent Design." He will place the concept of intelligent design in perspective by chronicling the challenges that fundamentalists and creationists have made to the concept of evolution and to its being taught in public schools.

Suarez is a retired psychiatrist, formerly director of the Section on Law and Psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA. He is currently outreach coordinator for the Center for Inquiry West in Hollywood and chairman of the community advisory board of KCET.

OXNARD

Dove School to offer Vacation Bible School

Dove Christian School will offer a Vacation Bible School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 21 through 25 at 241 W. Hill St. Registration will begin at 6 p.m.

The school is designed for those age 3 to 12.

There also will be a carnival planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26. Children also will be performing Vacation Bible School songs at 9:30 a.m. July 27. For information, call 487-5319.

SIMI VALLEY

Annual church carnival planned

St. Rose of Lima Church will conduct its annual family carnival from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, 2 to 11 p.m. July 19 and 2 to 9 p.m. July 20.

The carnival will take place on the school grounds of the parish. The school is behind the church at 1305 Royal Ave.

There will be food, music and entertainment. Rides will include a Ferris wheel and roller coaster. Ride bracelets will be offered for $20 Friday and $15 July 19 and 20 if purchased before 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the bracelets will cost $20.

Ah ighlight of the event will be the carnival raffle drawing July 20. The grand prize is a seven-day Mexican cruise for two. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each or a booklet of 30 tickets for $25.

Admission is $2 per person; children 12 and younger, and seniors 65 and older will be admitted free. Overflow parking is permitted across the street at Royal High School.

The proceeds will assist St. Rose of Lima in its charitable work. For information, call 526-1732.

THOUSAND OAKS

Bible school theme is Feel the Power

Conejo Valley Community Church is offering Vacation Bible School from 8:45 a.m. to noon July 28 through Aug. 1 at 750 Erbes Road.

The theme will be Feel the Power. There will be crafts, games, music and snacks.

The school is for children entering kindergarten through fifth grade. Cost is $20 per child. Family discounts are available.

Vacation Bible School Set to begin July 28

Discover Outrigger Island at Bible Fellowship Church Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon July 28 to Aug. 1.

Cost is $12 per child, with a maximum of $24 per family for children entering kindergarten through fifth grade. Each family will receive a music CD and one coupon to invite a friend for free.

Center for Spiritual Living to offer event

Dr. Judith Orloff will conduct a speaking and teaching engagement, "Awaken the Power of Positive Energy and Intuition for Emotional Freedom, Energy and Health." The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 19 at the Center for Spiritual Living, 880 Hampshire Road.

The workshop is with an intuitive and holistic approach for the personal well-being of anyone who experiences daily exhaustion, irritability and stress.

Orloff is an internationally known speaker and best-selling author on topics regarding health, energy and intuition, and is a pioneer regarding a new branch of medicine called energy psychiatry. She frequently lectures to professionals from medical schools, hospitals, research institutions, alternative health practices, social services and the public.

The workshop will provide six units of continuing education units awarded to nurses and others in related fields.
