Simi Valley golfer to play in U.S. Junior Amateur
Simi Valley golfer Chris Gilbert earned a trip to the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur by finishing fourth at a sectional qualifying tournament at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Hesperia. Gilbert finished the 36-hole qualifying event with a score of 3-under 141.
The U.S. Junior Amateur will take place July 21-26 at shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.
Simi City Championship: The 2008 Simi Valley Amateur Golf Championship is set for Aug. at Simi Hills Golf Course. The 36-hole event will feature play in five flights, including the Championship flight where former Rio Mesa High standout Ramie Sprinkling is the defending champion.
Cost to enter is $175 and deadline to enter the tournament is July 18. All net flight participants must have a valid USGA affiliated club handicap index. A valid handicap card may be requested at check-in. Players without a valid USGA/SCGA/LPGA index will play in the championship flight.

VCJGA event results: Ventura's Nick Gajeski won the Ventura County Junior Golf event held last week at Las Posas Country Club. Gajeski secured his first victory by firing a round of 1-over 72 that included three birdies and four bogeys. Tied for second were Shane Blanchard of Simi Valley and Jeremy Sanders of Chatsworth, who both finished at 2-over 73.
In the Girls' Championship Flight, Remy Molyneux from Westlake Village won her second straight tournament in as many weeks finishing with a score of 81. Katherine Lui of Agoura was second at 85, followed by Sophia Chen who fired a 92.
In the Boys' 12-14 flight, Brandon Shaw of Westlake Village made it two in a row, firing a 74 to win by two strokes over Westlake's Jake Andl, who fired a 76.
Group lessons at Sterling Hills: Sterling Hills Golf Course is offering golfers a chance to improve their games in a group setting through its group-lesson program.
The program is designed for beginning and intermediate golfers (advanced classes can be set up by request) and covers every aspect of the game in three, two-hour sessions.
Class size is a minimum of four golfers with a maximum of six to ensure personal attention for each golfer. Cost is $125.
People who have their own group of four or more golfers can set up their own class, day and time. Individuals can call and reserve a spot for one of the available dates or visit the instruction Web site at http://www.chriswithamgolf.com.
British Open fantasy opportunity: TeeClub.com is offering golfers a chance to participate in its free British Open fantasy golf challenge. Participants choose five golfers and score points based on how well those five players perform during the event. Participants can change their team as many times as they desire until the deadline for entries closes on July 17.
