Pair beer, potato chips in one bite
If your ultimate food and drink pairing is potato chips and beer, now you can have them all in one bite.
The folks at Portland, Ore.-based Beer Chips decided that chilly brews and crispy potatoes go together so well, they came up with a thick-cut, kettle-style potato chip flavored with real beer.
The result is a crunchy potato chip with a pleasant, if subtle, taste of beer.
The company also makes Chip Shots (margarita-flavored potato chips with tequila flavor and lime) and Hot Potatoes (spicy Bloody Mary-flavored chips).
Beer Chips (and other flavors) are available for $7.45 (five 2-ounce bags) from http://www.beerchips.com.
Fish Without a Doubt' is handy
Cookbooks that dub themselves "essential" usually aren't. But Rick Moonen and Roy Finamore's "Fish Without a Doubt" is a splendid exception. That's because the authors have managed to produce a cookbook that not only lives up to its title, but is written for the way real people cook.
The book's "Basics" section alone is worth the price. It offers cooking techniques, flavor pairings, how to battle the fishy smell in your kitchen, and a photo-heavy section prepping each item for cooking (such as cleaning soft-shell crabs).
The rest of the book, named the first of Gourmet magazine's monthly Cook Book Club selections, is organized by cooking techniques and uses.
Make up a fruitful mojito
While strawberries, honey and mint make a splendid combination in this seasonal take on the mojito, any fresh berry or tender fruit would work, including blueberries, raspberries, even thinly sliced chunks of pineapple.
Strawberry Honey Mojito
3 strawberries
5 fresh mint leaves
1 tablespoon honey
1 lime
Ice cubes
1 1/2 ounces light rum
2 ounces soda water
In a tall glass, combine the strawberries, mint leaves and honey. Muddle until the strawberries are well crushed and mint leaves bruised. Juice half of the lime into the glass. Cut the remaining half into wedges. Fill the glass two-thirds full with ice, then add the lime wedges. Pour in the rum and soda water. Stir gently and serve. Serves 1.
