Segment of highway to be named for Camarillo

The stretch of Highway 101 from the top of the Conejo Grade to Lewis Road has been officially designated the Adolfo Camarillo Memorial Highway, in honor of the pioneer rancher for whom the city was named.

Without dissent, the state Senate added its concurrence to a resolution authored by Assemblywoman Audra Strickland, R-Moorpark, and the designation takes effect immediately.

It will now be up to the Camarillo Ranch Foundation, which proposed the idea, to raise the estimated $5,000 to $6,000 to have signs erected alerting motorists to the name.

Former City Manager Bill Little said the foundation hopes to be able to raise the money and arrange to have the California Department of Transportation erect the signs this year as an appropriate celebration of the foundation's 10th year of existence.

"We're going to have go out and see if the public will be generous enough to give us a few bucks to do it," Little said.

The nonprofit foundation maintains and operates the city-owned Camarillo Ranch, and docents provide tours of the 1892 ranch home where Camarillo lived with his wife and five children.

The 4.5-mile segment of highway runs through the approximately 10,000-acre Rancho Calleguas that Camarillo once owned. Camarillo donated the right-of-way to the railroad that runs through town adjacent to Lewis Road and also donated the land on which the high school named for him is situated.
