$6,000 reward offered in rock-throwing case

Friends and relatives of a woman injured last month by a rock thrown from an overpass are offering more than $6,000 in return for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Monica Dalto, 36, was hit in the head by a large rock as she rode in a car under the Wendy Drive overpass on Highway 101 on June 11. She underwent brain surgery and had a titanium plate put in her head.

Dalto's colleagues at the Ventura County Probation Agency donated $2,355 for the reward, her uncle contributed $2,000, Diamond Ground Products in Newbury Park gave $1,000 and Ventura County Crime Stoppers pledged up to $1,000, according to a prepared statement from the Probation Agency.

Dalto is expected to recover fully from her injuries. Although she is still experiencing numbness in her right hand, the probation officer plans to return to work today, according to the Probation Agency.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer J. Howell of the California Highway Patrol at 553-0800.

You know some kid is going to come forward on this one! Were talking $6,000 worth of PS3 supplies. I hope the perp is caught and sentenced to the max! Scumbag!

if this was a juvenile, he/she should be treated as an adult in this crime. 6K is a lot of gas money also.

I hope someone comes forward now. I also hope who ever did this will pay for what they did.

Honestly, if anyone had any inclination as to whom the perp was, wouldn't they have come forward by now? there has been a reward since it happened, granted it is a little higher now. When you are driving, do you take a second thought about a pedestrian walking and seemingly minding their own business? I don't think most people do. Also, do we REALLY know the rock was launched by someone, freak accidents do happen.

Good point there juniormafia!

I have wondered, if this truly was an accident or intentional. I wonder if someone really threw the rock off of the overpass or if it was kicked over by a car, loose, etc? I don't recall seeing any information that lead investigaters to thinking that someone had actually thrown the rock. It is just random thoughts I have had on this story. I will be interested to find out what really happened... if we are so lucky enough to find out!

Thanks Relvd98!

I agree juniormafia - I know if I saw a crime I wouldn't be sitting around waiting to see "what's in it for me."

Posted by Relvd98 on July 8, 2008 at 9:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Considering that is a whole lot of money, wouldn't one think someone come forward?

Posted by juniormafia_ny on July 8, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

another question, aren't there usually fences along bridges, if someone had thrown that rock, they must have been some kind of shot to make it over the fence, straight into the sunroof of the car WHILE the car is moving.

Posted by missing805 on July 8, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Im sure the investigators have thought this thru and have concluded that it was thrown by someone. Thats what sad about society now adays, we have an attitude of "Whats in it for me". I cant think of me witnessing someone doing something like this or even doing it myself, and my concience not bothering me day and night.

Posted by LivinInPoorMansPV on July 8, 2008 at 10:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is what I said from the start also...seriously, isnt this right near the TRUCK WEIGHING STATION? And come on, who are these people, she is making a full recovery. Earn money for people in need, not to just try and locate a POSSIBLE PERP. Seems to me like someone is trying to prove a point, or get on someone's good side. Offer a reward for MURDER suspects. Is this really news? And like I said before and Junior is saying now, to actually throw a rock and make a direct hit into a sunroof COME ON!

What is the agency and uncle trying to PROVE, grow a set in some other way.

Posted by BeaHappi on July 8, 2008 at 10:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, this could have been so much worse. And maybe the next time they try this, someone could be killed.

There have been many instances where things thrown from an overpass have killed people in the cars that they hit. Or the driver of the hit car loses control and this causes an accident.

Perhaps the people who are putting up the reward $$ just never want the person responsible to do this again.

This particular incident was not accidental. A tip leading to an arrest that flows through Crime Stoppers can be tied to all rewards while anonymity is protected. Whereas Crime Stoppers will pay based upon arrest only, other rewards require arrest and conviction. This means a tipster could see an initial reward within days from Crime Stoppers and still receive the other rewards following trial. Call (bilingual) 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), text "tip375" and the message to CRIMES or submit via the web in English or Spanish format at http://www.VenturaCountyCrimeStoppers...

Equitable_Enforcer, all I have to say is, Good Luck. In this case, I don't believe that people aren't coming forward for fear of retaliation; I think they're not coming forward because there are no witnesses.

Posted by FedUp on July 8, 2008 at 11:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

so, what some of you are saying is: that it is more likely it was knocked off the overpass by a passing car and went into the sunroof, as opposed to be thrown by someone and into the sunroof. I will take the odds that someone threw it and made a "lucky" shot into the sunroof, over a random car directing the rock that way.
I am always wary of someone walking over an overpass. perhaps it comes from my youth days of trying to spit on passing cars from the victoria overpass on the 126. Yeah, I know. I am a criminal. :)
I do hope Ms. Dalto makes a full recovery, and they catch the person who did this.

Posted by juniormafia_ny on July 8, 2008 at 11:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)

FedUp, you are a criminal... Also, haven't you ever seen that documentary 'Final Destination'? There are 3 parts to it, it shows just how freakish accidents can be... LOL

Posted by bugmenot on July 8, 2008 at 11:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

FedUp, from what i've read from juniormafia you would need to replace "more likely" in your sentence above with "feasible".

I think the science would say that's far fetched that it was a freak accident, but you cannot dismiss the possibility.

If it were a kid, maybe they told a "homie" who values $6k more than a friendship with a loser.

Posted by Ms_California on July 8, 2008 at 12:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I still think it is a great possibility that it was an accident and not intentional. I haven't been given any information to think that isn't a possibility.

I wish I knew who did it...

Equitable_Enforcer said, "This particular incident was not accidental."

How do you know? Were you the one throwing the rocks?

If it wasn't accidental, it sounds like there is some infomration that may be out there that might actually lead to an arrest. If that's the case, wouldn't it be helpful to release that info to make the search faster?

Adam Monroe...I am glad I'm not your friend, I would be in prison for the rest of my life.

U terd....

Posted by LivinInPoorMansPV on July 8, 2008 at 3:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

yeah remember the original story...they think that the vehicle was singled out. Seriously, some person is standing on the overpass knowing EXACTLY when Monica's Uncle is going to drive under it, I am sure he never stops for gas, or chooses a different lane, and this person had the exact time figured out when he was going to drive under at 65+ miles per hour, see him amongst all the traffic, and then throw a rock precisley in his sunroof. I paintball, and I don't think I could have got a shot off and landed like that with my
high powered gun.

Juniormafuia, there isn't a fence or sidewalk on one side of the Wendy overpass. Caltran is considering adding a fence. Its seems hard to believe that on the Wendy overpass at that time of day (previous article said 9:00 PM, I think) no one would have not seen something, but I think you're right. Maybe it was just a freak accident.

Posted by Equitable_Enforcer on July 8, 2008 at 5:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The position of the vehicle at the moment of impact of the rock ... the size of the rock ... and several other factors would tend to indicate that for the rock to have been accidentally knocked from the overpass was highly unlikely.

I think the VC Star should record Equitable_Enforcer's IP address and report it to the authorities. He seems to know something about this incident.

I am merely one of those who are greasing the skids for somebody to provide information regarding this crime. That I know the incicent to be a crime makes me that much more determined to bring the perp to justice.

Put your prejudice against trucks aside for 1 second and and think. “the rock came into the sunroof on the top of the car.” Trucks may drop rocks, but not throw rocks into the air, (not that big.) and down into sunroof’s. the rock came from over head. (Unless the car was tailgating which so many reckless car drivers do)
Plus I think the cops know what they’re doing.
There was a story a little while ago, about a bowling ball going through a window of a car, thrown from an overpass. (Or maybe you think the bowling ball was dropped by a truck) think, The rock coming from a truck, more then likely would of come from an open gravel truck or dump truck. And why and how many of these trucks are on wendy dr overpass at 9pm.
I’m not saying it couldn’t happen. It’s just really unlikely. (more like a chance getting hit by lighting.)
There has been video’s of kid's throwing rocks at cars. So it dose happen

One more thing. Yes there is a “TRUCK WEIGHING STATION?” near. So the truck would be in the right lane on its approach to the station. So the car would have to have been behind the truck (again tailgating). I mean “seriously,” how likely would it of been at 9pm that they would be driving 65 tailgating a truck when its more likely they (like most people) would be in the fast lanes and not behind the truck. Unless you mean the truck tossed the rock into the air at least 30’ or more and to the side, and just happen to make it into the sunroof. Or someone drop or tossed the rock from the overpass. Which make’s more sense?

wolf9walker...

Trucks do drive on overpasses last time I checked......

Posted by eas on July 9, 2008 at 12:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If someone threw it they must be a good thrower
and if a truck ran it over and threw it up that was probably a truck going fast in order to throw that rock that high

“The rock coming from a truck, more then likely would of come from an open gravel truck or dump truck. And WHY and HOW many of these trucks are on wendy dr overpass at 9PM. “
9pm at night. Please don’t speed read; you’ll miss words. Yes I know there are trucks on the wendy dr. but a bottom dump (gravel) or a dump truck? It would have to come from residential area (construction is not permitted at night in residential areas) or from south 101 off ramp going to where? Except for caltrans work. I don’t know of any construction working at night, that would be bringing rocks in at night. Do you? As for these trucks driving fast on the over pass. It would have to be load full to top for a rock to fly out. And any one ever stuck behind one of these things at a stop knows most takes forever to get up to speed. And with lights on each side of the overpass and a hill they are even slower. Or it could have been a flat bed for home depot. But the flat beds Iv seen, the rocks on them would have crushed to whole car.

Eas
“if a truck ran it over and threw it up that was probably a truck going fast in order to throw that rock that high”
The size of the rock that hit her, if a truck ran over it. 1st how did it get onto the hwy? 2sd the truck tires would have kicked out the side instead of up into the air. It would be a big fluke.

This is the 1st article about it.
“California Highway Patrol investigators determined someone threw the rock from the Wendy Drive overpass while Dalto's vehicle was northbound on Highway 101, the CHP said in a prepared statement released Friday.”

“Whitmeyer said he doesn't think his niece was specifically targeted, but he believes whoever threw the rock did it intentionally.”
LivinInPoorMansPV

As for hitting a moving target, ever hear of a lucky shot. My Grandpa was a hunter, and he showed me how to shoot a bow and arrow. He taught that to hit a moving target you don’t aim at the target you lead it and shot in front of it. If you shot at it, by the time the arrow gets to where the target, it won’t be there. But if you shot where the target maybe you have a hit. Maybe. So the next time you play paint ball, don’t aim at your opponent if he is moving, and try leading him and shooting in front of him. That might help your game better.
