The latest in pet food, grooming products and must-have doggie accessories were on display at the Summerfest Dog Show held over the weekend at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

Vendors sold everything from gourmet meals to salon-quality shampoo and aromatherapy sprays.

"This is an entire pot roast baked in a can, 100 percent beef, and this one has chicken tenders, apples, peas and carrots," said Susan Keyfauver, pointing to a selection of ready-to-eat meals for dogs.

"We have all locally sourced ingredients, and we even have a vegetable supplier who goes down to the farmers market in Chicago," said Keyfauver, who is West Coast regional manager for Evanger's, an Illinois-based pet food manufacturer. "It's 100 percent human-grade food packed in a can and packed by hand."

In another booth, Stephen Hansen from Orange County was handing out samples of Taste of the Wild dried dog food made with either smoked salmon, roast venison and buffalo, or roast duck, quail and smoked turkey, mixed with fruits and vegetables. "It's the closest to what the animal would have eaten in the wild and the closest you can get to raw," he said.

More than 2,000 dogs participated in three days of competition hosted by the Channel City Kennel Club from Santa Barbara, the Santa Maria Kennel Club and the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Association.

Debbie Zimmermann from Santa Paula was on hand to offer a soothing and relaxing massage.

"The dogs are pretty wound up, and pretty excited, so I am working on several different levels, to help relax them so that they'll do their best in the ring and to improve their reach because if they reach further, they'll impress the judge," said Zimmermann, who runs Best Friends Animal Massage.

Zimmermann also advocates aromatherapy using lavender, chamomile and other herbs and plants to soothe doggie nerves.

Dogs can also enjoy the benefit of the same types of salon products that their owners might use.

John Paul, co-founder of Paul Mitchell, has developed a line of hair care products for pooches, including several types of shampoo designed for different types of hair, leave-in conditioner and de-tangling spray.

"Even when the economy is the way it is, you're still going to spend money on your own hair to make yourself feel better, and you're going to do it on your animals, as well," said Rosalee Broguiere, who distributes the John Paul Pet line.

Dave Salson drove from Delaware to set up shop at the show with his Pampered Paws Fine Jewelry, a selection of 14 karat gold and silver breed-specific brooches, pendants, earrings and pill boxes.

"We travel cross-country doing shows because not many pet people buy our product because we're high end," he said.

There were also pet portrait services, snacks and treat stands, and all shapes and sizes of doggie beds, blankets and other accessories.

You know what I didn't see there, that is one of the best pet products I have ever encountered, was the Booster Bath. This bathtub is designed for dogs and it is really a time-saver and a BACK-saver! Their website is http://www.boosterbath.com and is well worth a visit.
