Every 4th of July the Conejo Recreation & Park District Sports Office holds the softball Home Run Derby at Borchard Community Park Field #2 in Newbury Park. The competition categories include Men's Masters, Men's Open, and Women's Open. Each batter is given 10 outs and attempts to hit as many over the fence as possible. Awards are given to 1st - 3rd place winners. For the 2008 Home Run Derby the winners were:

Richard Benson (18 home runs) 1st place - Men's Open

Nick Cruz (13) 2nd place - Men's Open

David Bush (12) 3rd place - Men's Open

Robert Rutherford (11 home runs) 1st place - Men's Masters

Dave Marshall (8) 2nd place - Men's Masters (by hit off)

Jan Schiffmann (8) 3rd place - Men's Masters

Dennis Ruli of USSSA Resmondo/Specialty Tank/Worth a slow pitch men's major team deserves an honorable mention. Dennis donated two Worth bats to the 1st place winners. For fun, Dennis participates in the Derby and this year beat his past record of 49 by hitting 56 home runs.

For those interested in playing in a slow pitch softball league, CRPD Coed Adult Fall Softball League will begin September 5, 2008. Those interested may contact the Sports Office at 805/495-4674 for further information or visit www.crpd.org .
