Penny out through break

Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny is expected to be out through the All-Star break after shutting down a simulated game Saturday with more pain in his shoulder.

Penny (5-9), who's on a seven-game losing streak, has been on the disabled list since June 15 with tendinitis and other shoulder problems. He pitched well through the first three innings of his simulated game but stopped in the fourth inning when he felt a growing discomfort.

"He didn't do anything on that particular pitch, but all of a sudden, something was weird," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "He used all of his pitches, and about three or four (pitches) into the last (inning), he felt it, and that's it."

Torre doesn't expect to get Penny back in the rotation for at least two weeks. He'll be re-examined by a team doctor on Monday.
