Two people were killed in separate mid-afternoon Fourth of July roadway accidents that happened within minutes of each other in Ventura County.

Neither person had been identified Friday night.

The first accident was reported at 2:37 p.m. on Grimes Canyon Road north of Moorpark.

A vehicle ran off the side of the road near Turfway Road. It landed some 40 feet away on its roof, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two of the vehicle's occupants, including a child, received only minor injuries, the CHP said, but a third person was killed.

The second accident was reported two minutes later, at 2:39 p.m. A car traveling south on Highway 101 near Lakeview Canyon Road and the Los Angeles County line went over on its side, according to the CHP.

A man inside the car died after receiving a serious head injury, the CHP said.

Highway 101, from Mid-Ventura thru Oxnard, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, and the San Fernando Valley clearly runs East-West...until it branches off to the 134.
Why do they keep calling this stretch of Highway, "Southbound"?

shaver_one: Because CalTrans considers it a basically north-south route though it is not always a true compass direction. Lots of things are different in Los Angeles County vs Ventura County.

The 101 is north and south because it takes you from southern California to northern California.
It only makes a small east and west between 170, 134 and 101 split to Gaviota.
To change it north/south 101at the 5, 10, 60 and 101 at the east L.A. interchange to top of L.A. then east/west 101 to Hollywood, then north/south 101 to universal city. Then back to east/west 101 from 170 134 split to gaviota, then finally back to north/south 101 to northern California. That would be more confusing then it is now. Sense I travel these hwys. It dose not confuse me. But there are those who are new to California. Besides it is north/south more miles then east/west
