THOUSAND OAKS

Plant sale, orchard tour scheduled

A water-wise plant sale is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, today at the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden.

Also, an orchard tour Sunday will focus on rare fruit. Ed Hager will lead and answer questions at 2 p.m. Sturdy shoes and bottled water are suggested.

Enter at Gainsborough Road at Jeaunine Drive, between Lynn and Moorpark roads.

Park and walk south on the path and follow signs to the entrance.

Branch library to be site of used book sale

Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library will sponsor a used book sale from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12 at the Newbury Park Branch Library, 2331 Borchard Road, Newbury Park.

Thousands of books will be available, priced at 35 cents for children's books, 50 cents for paperbacks, and $1 for hardbacks.

The sale will feature a variety of cassettes from Hap Palmer, the celebrated performer of children's educational music.

Book donations are accepted throughout the year, and used books are on sale daily, at both the Grant R. Brimhall Library in Thousand Oaks and the Newbury Park Branch Library.

Admission and parking are free.

Theater company to host wine tasting

The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company plans to host a wine tasting and silent auction from 3 to 6 p.m., July 13, at WineStyles in the Janss Marketplace at 193 N. Moorpark Road,

Organizers plan to raise money for the company's theater programs.

Admission is $45 and includes six wine samples, hors d'oeuvres and entertainment by Kingsmen Shakespeare Company actors.

A silent auction will include getaway packages, golf outings and theater tickets.

Guests may also purchase wine from the WineStyles collection.

The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company is a nonprofit professional theater organization.

The current season features performances of "As You Like It" through July 13 and "Henry IV: The Apprenticeship of Good Prince Hal" July 18 through Aug. 3.

The organization also presents apprentice programs for college and high school students, an educational tour program in local schools, and summer theater camps for youths.

The wine tasting and auction are limited to 75 people.

Golf tournament needs sponsors

Thousand Oaks High School Football Boosters will present an annual golf tournament at Wood Ranch Golf Course on Aug. 11.

The money raised from the tournament will augment the limited funds the coaching staff is budgeted.

VENTURA COUNTY

Leadership program accepts applications

The Ventura County Leadership Academy is accepting applications for participation in the 2008-09 program year, which will begin in September and end in May.

Participation is open to anyone living or working in Ventura County.

The academy was founded with the mission of developing a diverse group of leaders whose actions enhance the quality of life throughout the county and is an initiative of the United Way of Ventura County.

Meetings to study the topics of public safety, education, economic development, arts and culture, healthcare, nonprofits, agriculture and regional governance are held one or two days a month.

The nine-month curriculum includes a trip to Sacramento to study the effect of state government on local issues.
