P.H. sales tax increase to be placed on Nov. ballot
The Port Hueneme City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to put a half cent sales tax increase on the Nov. 4 ballot.
The council voted 4-0 in favor, with Councilman Murray Rosenbluth unable to attend.
No member of the public attended the meeting to speak for or against the measure.
"I would take this to mean that people understand our financial condition and the need for more revenue to provide an adequate level of service," City Manager David Norman said.
Port Hueneme's action followed by a day the Oxnard City Council's vote to place a half cent sales tax increase on its November ballot.
If approved by voters in both cities, the sales tax would increase from 7.25 percent to 7.75 percent. The cost to residents would be $50 for every $10,000 in taxable purchases.
The tax increase would bring Port Hueneme an estimated $250,000 a year in additional revenue for the city's general fund.
Since June 2007, Port Hueneme has eliminated seven full-time positions, including two in the Police Department.

How about cutting spending, or is that too much to ask. Always solve the overspending addiction of politicians with tax increases! Enough is enough! These City governments are overstaffed as it is, over paid as it is, and there is little to no growth going on which requires full staffing in all departments like they have right now. Add in the coming State sales tax increases they want because they have overspent their way into financial ruin and we are looking at 16% to 20% sales taxes around here. That's totally ridiculous! Add in rising gas prices, food prices, higher income taxes if Democrats get their way and all the rest we are looking at CHANGE you didn't really want. Less disposable income in your pocket is real change you can hope doesn't happen. Vote "NO" on tax increases and make these cities start living within their means like all the rest of us have to do! Vote NObama as well because he is going to drain your pocket book and paychecks like a bilge pump on the USS Enterprise.

yep - I agree - take money from the hard working, tax paying citizens to fix the mess you got yourself into. If Obama is elected I won't be able to afford to live in California any longer- between higher income tax and having to flip the medical bill for all those who don't pay well I refuse to go bankrupt after I've spent my entire life trying to make an honest, good living... and Obama will see to it that those who did work hard pay the price! Not himself of course!

SocietyDweller...
I can see your point of view, but people seem to have no problem spending extra money on cell phones, internet, toys (boats, etc..), video games, i-pods, cable televison, SUV's, HD TV's,etc..etc..blah, blah, blah... yet when a city or state asks those same people to pay more in taxes to fund the programs and services that are required (like police and fire) these same people act like they are going to go broke all of the sudden.

The following was cut and pasted directly out of Port Hueneme's 2008-2009 Budget
"Fiscal Year 2007-08 saw an aggressive pace of
revenue enhancement efforts aimed at reducing
the General Fund’s structural deficit. Most of
the City’s user fees were raised, some of which
had not been increased for 30 years."
30 years!!
