3 deputies and their canines win at trials
Three Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputies and their canine partners won the team championship in the Redondo Beach Police Canine Trials.
The 21st annual event, held May 9 and 10 at the Redondo Union High School football stadium, tested 28 law enforcement canines from across California in such areas as obedience, agility and searching.
The team championship was decided by averaging the overall scores of each team's handlers, department officials said.
Deputy Scott Duffner and Hanno placed third in the manwork category, which consists of muzzle attack, call off and suspect apprehension events.
Senior Deputy Brian Slominski and Ahron placed third in the open division, for dogs that have participated in three or more competitions, and second in the narcotic building search.
Senior Deputy Dean Worthy and Balu placed third in the novice division.
The department's canine unit presented Undersheriff Craig Husband with the awards during a ceremony on June 24.
