Based on genetics alone, Gary Fabricius wouldn't mind if the rumor became a reality.

But the Newbury Park High football coach isn't having a Panthers jersey printed just yet.

Nicholas Montana, the youngest son of Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, was spotted on Newbury Park's campus this week.

The 6-foot-2 junior quarterback is supposedly considering a transfer from Concord De La Salle, and was exploring his Ventura County options.

Montana trains in Southern California with quarterback coach Steve Clarkson, who also mentored former Oaks Christian quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

"If he is looking to relocate it would be nice to think that he would even think about going here," Fabricius said. "We do throw the ball and offer some of what they might be looking for. But nobody has said to me he is coming here or will be at practice Tuesday."

If Montana did attend Newbury Park, he would join Jeff Meinecke, Jordan Brower and Servite transfer Matt Juels in the competition to replace Colby Cameron behind center.

Reporters in Northern California contacted Thursday said Montana was at De La Salle's passing league game last weekend.

Montana's older brother, Nathan, was a third-string quarterback at De La Salle last season, and will be a preferred walk on at Notre Dame — his father's alma mater — starting in the fall.

Joe Montana, 52, led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl titles and was a three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player during his 15-year NFL career.

"If his son's a player, that would be a great thing," Fabricius said.

"I haven't heard anything definite. We are just moving forward like it's a nice little rumor."
