"I felt red, white and blue all over."
— Edward H. White II, U.S. astronaut, on his 1965 spacewalk
Back down on planet Earth, in Ventura County, U.S.A., anyone with a scintilla of patriotic spirit will be feeling — or wearing or decorating with — red, white and blue on Friday, the Fourth of July holiday.
Well, unless you're a Target employee, which means you might be feeling blue because you have to work, wearing red and khaki, on Independence Day.
Most of us will have the day off, however, and communities in and around Ventura County will offer plenty of opportunities — parades, concerts, picnics, pyrotechnic displays — to show off your tri-colored wardrobe and flag-waving ardor.
When day is done, look to the skies for one final explosion of red, white and blue, although fireworks come in other colors, too.
Here are ways to celebrate the Fourth in and around town (all activities take place Friday unless otherwise noted).
Camarillo
Fireworks and Fun Day at Camarillo High School, Adolfo Road and Mission Oaks Boulevard. Co-sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Lions Club, city of Camarillo, and Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District, the celebration will start at 3 p.m. with kids' games, Jolly Jumps, food available for sale and live music (Checkered Record from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Preachers Blues Band from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Camarillo Community Band from 7 to 9 p.m.). The fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. Admission is $2 for those 12 and older, $1 for kids 4 to 11, and free for children 3 and younger. Tickets are available in advance at City Hall, 601 Carmen Drive; the PVRPD office, 1605 E. Burnley St.; or the day of the event at the high school. Ticket proceeds will benefit booster clubs and other organizations at Camarillo High. Free shuttles will run from the Metrolink station on Lewis Road. 388-5307.
Fillmore
Community Fireworks Display begins at dusk at Fillmore Middle School, 627 Sespe Ave. A few changes are taking place this year at the city-sponsored display. First, the location has moved from Fillmore High School because a recently installed all-weather track wasn't compatible with fireworks. Second, the middle school grounds will be closed to the public, so no seating will be available at the fireworks site itself, but all city parks will be open as alternative viewing spots, or residents can see the 15- to 20-minute show from most locations in Fillmore. Free. 524-3701; http://www.fillmoreca.com.
Sespe Creek Car Show and Festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Park, Central Avenue between Main and Santa Clara streets. The event will feature pre-1975 classic autos in 32 categories (including street rods, stock, modified, muscle and drag), vendors, food booths, a horseshoe tournament and live music by House Arrest. Free. 524-2546.
Firecracker Train boards at 6 p.m. at Fillmore and Western Railway Co., 351 Santa Clara St. Passengers dine on tri-tip or chicken and standard barbecue side dishes while riding through the Heritage Valley, then watch the city's fireworks show. One-hour daytime rides (without the food or fireworks) depart at 1 and 3 p.m. Evening train: $70 adults and teens, $39 children 4 to 12, $20 kids 2 and 3. Day trains: $12 adults and teens, $7 children 4 to 12, $4 kids 2 and 3. Free lap seating for infants. For reservations, call 524-2546. Information: http://www.fwry.com.
