Thousand Oaks Little Leaguers top District 13 rival Moorpark

The Thousand Oaks 11-12-year-old Little League All-Stars have found Moorpark to betheir nemesis over the years.

On Saturday in the District 13 Tournament at Thousand Oaks, the host team earned an 8-5 win over Moorpark, three-time defending district champion.

"It was a great win for us," said Jeff Simonsgaard, the Thousand Oaks coach.

"They had beaten us as 10- and 11-year-olds," said Simonsgaard. "We've been knocking on their door.

"It was a big confidence builder and it was nice to be playing on our home field."

After Conejo Valley went to the 2004 Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., Moorpark won back-to-back Section 1 championships, but couldn't advance out of the Southern California State Tournament. Montalvo Little League of Ventura is the defending Section 1 champion.

Moorpark won District 13 titles in the 10-, 11-and 12-year-old divisions in 2007.

Justin Causey of Thousand Oaks hit a two-run double in the first inning to ignite the offense. Thousand Oaks scored two more runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Ricky Davis walked three times and scored three runs. Brian Strasburger scored two runs. Causey had two hits and three RBIs. Matt Strickland and Nick Jelinek drove in runs. Brody Pettek had a double and scored a run.

Moorpark's Ryan Swanson had a hit and two RBIs. Bradley Fullerton had a hit and scored twice. Blake Groff had a homer. Charlie McQuinn had an RBI single and Trevor Weston added a hit.

Port Hueneme (2-0) will play Thousand Oaks today at 5 p.m. Northside will play Sunset in the other game. Sunset defeated El Rio, 3-1, and Northside defeated Simi Valley, 12-0.

District 63: Carpinteria edged Fillmore, 5-4, and Ojai Valley defeated Santa Paula, 8-0, in the District 63 pool play games for the 11-12-year-old division.

Montalvo Little League is hosting the Junior and 10-11-year-old divisions. Ventura Coastal Little League (Camino Real Park) is hosting the 9-10 division tournament.

World Series event: The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum will host a day of fun-filled activities to launch the Shetland and Pinto Division World Series opening ceremonies on July 17 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Games for children include knock-'em-down, ring toss, batting cages and pitching. There will be jumpers, an obstacle course, a rock climber and musical entertainment.

The Simi Youth Baseball League will host a five-day World Series for Shetland and Pinto players. Information: http://www.reaganlibrary.com or http://www.simiworldseries.com.

Newbury Park wins title: The Newbury Park PONY 13 All-Stars started the 2008 postseason play by going 4-0 and winning the Las Virgenes Tournament at Lupin Hill. Newbury Park opened its tournament play by defeating Westlake, 13-6.

Casey Hershfield went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and was also the winning pitcher. Jack Duncan went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Austin Demaille was 3 for 4 with an RBI. In Game 2, Newbury P ark defeated Agoura, 7-6. Chris Murphree was the winning pitcher and Zack Brower went 2 for 2, including a key three-run homer.

In the semifinal game, Newbury Park defeated Simi Youth, 7-5. Murphree and Hershfield pitched a strong 6 1/3 innings with Duncan getting the final two outs for the save. Ben Okun went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Hershfield 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Demaille went 1 for 3 including a timely two-RBI single to put Newbury Park on top.

In the championship game, Newbury Park defeated West Hills, 4-3, behind the strong pitching performances of Duncan (three innings, two runs, two hits and five strikeouts) and Murphree (four innings, one run, no hits, two strikeouts), who got the win. Austin Mason had an outstanding defensive game behind the plate and also helped lead the Newbury Park offense, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Demaile also went 2 for 3 and Duncan was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Other team members contributing to the championship effort include Luke Avery, Scotty Caliguri, Andrew Clark, Brison Cronenbold and Kurt Garifo. The team manager is Rick Brower and the coaches are Erick Mason and Craig Crandall.

Newbury Park opens PONY Sanction play July 10-14 in West Hills.

Camarillo finishes second: The Camarillo Mustang A All-Stars (9-10) took second place, losing to Agoura in the championship in the Las Virgenes Tournament.

Eight teams competed in the tournament. Camarillo players are Kody Schmidt, Elijah Alexander, Shane Anderson, Bryce Arnold, Chris McKee, Daniel Bytheway, Tyler Foreman, Eddie Guerrero, Perry Johnson, Andrew Martinez, Miles Melamed and Quinn Torres. Chris McKee, Brian Schmidt and Scott Johnson are the coaches. Camarillo will play this weekend in the Newbury Park Tournament.

Ventura Coastal success: The Ventura Coastal 9-10 All-Stars defeated Saticoy, 5-2, at Camino Real Park.

Ventura Coastal staged a dramatic comeback by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead then held Saticoy scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.

Ventura Coastal was led by the outstanding pitching of Jimmy Becker, the standout defense of Bear Hoffman and Travis Eckberg and the timely hitting of Mikey Avila-Sedilos. Brandon Cox ran the bases well.

Ventura Coastal is 2-0 in tournament play, snapping a two-year winless drought. Mike Mislinay and Steve Ledesma are the managers.

The Ventura Coastal 11-12 All- Stars defeated Foothill, 6-5, at Goleta Valley.

Ventura Coastal was led by Tavish Towner on the mound. Tavish was relieved by Devon Peterson, who struck out the last two batters to lock up the victory. Robert Michel and Omar Garcia were top hitters.

Mora hits grand slams: Brian Mora of the CBC All-Stars hit back-to-back grand slams in the 17-1 victory over Port Hueneme on Saturday in the CBC Minor Division Tournament.

Mora followed with an inside-the-park grand slam in a 22-5 mercy win over Woodland Hills on Sunday.

The CBC Tournament is in its 50th year.
