Senate sends governor bill on Simi cemetery
The Senate on Monday sent to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill to allow the city of Simi Valley to participate in the creation of a new public cemetery.
The Simi Valley Public Cemetery, commonly called Pioneer Cemetery, is nearing capacity, and community leaders are considering long-term plans to build another public cemetery in a few years.
Because current law prohibits cities from operating cemeteries larger than 5 acres, the city of Simi Valley sought the proposed legislation. The bill, AB 1932 by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, passed unanimously in both houses of the Legislature.
The existing 5.3-acre cemetery off Royal Avenue is operated by the Rancho Simi Cemetery District, an agency that has been plagued by fiscal problems.
The Ventura County Local Agency Formation Commission has recommended the city take over the district's operations, but no action has been initiated to dissolve the district.
Schwarzenegger must act on the bill within 12 days.
