Historical document comes to Reagan Library
President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation will be on display at the Reagan Library for four days in September.
On loan from the National Archives and Records Administration, the five-page document will be on view Sept. 19-22. To accommodate guests, the library will offer extended hours.
Lincoln issued the proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of the Civil War. In it, Lincoln declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
For preservation purposes, this original document is only allowed to be on display for four days each calendar year.
Extended hours of viewing will be announced in the coming month. Check the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum Web site: http://www.reaganfoundation.org.
