Rotary District 5240 "The 4-Way Test and Me" Essay Contest
Students throughout Simi Valley are invited to participate in the 2007-2008 Annual Rotary District 5240 essay contest.
For many decades Rotary Clubs and Rotarians around the world have used the 4-Way Test as an instrument to develop respect and understanding among peoples. The Rotary 4-Way Test is the following: Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The goal of this contest is to encourage students to think about the meaning of "The 4-Way Test." This can be done by writing their thoughts in an essay, which expresses clearly and creatively how the principles of the test impact their daily lives. Essays should be at least: 150 words for grades 1-6; 200 words for grades 7-8; and 250 words for grades 9-12.
This contest is open to students in three categories: grade school (1-6), middle school(7-8), and high school(9-12). There is a separate division for special needs students who have a documented disability so severe as to prevent them from writing the essay. Special needs entries may be essays dictated to a teacher and transcribed verbatim or may be other types of media such as drawings, etc. as long as they may be easily duplicated for judging.
Awards will be given at each level and special needs in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place categories. First Place -- $250; Second Place -- $175; and Third Place -- $75.
Entries should be submitted to Simi Sunrise Rotary Club Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise, P.O. Box 11, Simi Valley, CA 93063, Attention Mel Vines, no later than March 21, 2008. One winning paper from each school level and one special needs paper will then go to the District level for final reading, April 4, 2008. District winners will be announced prior to the end of the school year.
