A touch of Tuscany in Thousand Oaks

More from Conejo Valley
Rolling hills dotted with oak and pepper trees, the sun peeking through the clouds, hawks soaring overhead. A view of the Tuscan countryside? Could be, but in reality it's the view from the kitchen of Tom and Marsha Ohmer's home in Thousand Oaks.
Built in 1992, this approximately 3,400 square foot custom Tuscan style home sits on a quiet cul-de-sac across from acres of designated open space. Ohmer thinks the home's private location and views are one of its best assets. "It's really quiet right across the way this is all protected land. Just up the street is a trail head with miles of trail space. It's really nice."
The front yard is landscaped with palm trees and a variety of flowering shrubs. Arizona flagstone steps leading to the entry are a nice accent to the home's Tuscan gold exterior and chocolate brown trim. Before entering the home through the beautiful leaded glass doors, turn and take in the amazing view of the mountains, (who needs Italy?)
The Ohmer's, previously featured in a Star article on couples who have rekindled romances, were college sweethearts who found each other again after almost 30 years. Now married a year and a half, they are looking for a new home to start the next chapter of their lives, with their blended family of three children.
The home's interior is spacious and airy. Stepping down into the formal living room from the raised ceramic tile entry, this ample sized room is a natural gathering place. A hand-carved wood mantle with mirror surrounds the fireplace. The soffited ceiling is enhanced with crown molding and recessed lighting.
Adjacent to the living room, is the formal dining room. Graced with picture windows, the view of the mountains is spectacular.
The windows in the living room and kitchen are UV protected cutting out 98 percent of ultraviolet rays, so they can be open to the views year round.
To the left of the entry way is the expansive kitchen. The counter with sink, dishwasher and trash compactor is lined with windows, (who wouldn't want to do the dishes?) A nook next to the kitchen, also surrounded by picture windows, is perfect for casual family dining. A balcony off the kitchen, complete with gas heater, is a pleasant spot to enjoy your morning coffee or sip a glass of wine in the evening. A walk-in pantry is adjacent to a work room or butlers pantry, which also serves as the laundry room. (Laundry hook ups are in the garage as well). The kitchen extends to the family room through a center aisle. Double ovens, a built in microwave and a second sink line one side. The white Kitchen Aid appliances are a nice contrast to the oak cabinets, many with inset glass doors. Lining the other side of the wide kitchen aisle is the oak-faced refrigerator and a five-burner Décor range. A small built-in desk at the end of the counter completes the kitchen.
Off the kitchen is the family room, a second fireplace is framed with a mirror above the mantle. Plantation shuttered windows and French doors lead to the back yard.
This five bedroom, four bath home is ideal for entertaining, inside and out.
The downstairs bedroom has been converted into a home theatre. The envy of any movie buff, the room features a 126-inch screen, complete with 5.1 Dolby digital DTS sound system, and high definition projection system. The room has been outfitted with sound absorbent panels to make it acoustically tuned. Movie posters line the walls and black out curtains keep out the light. Black leather Barclay recliners are ideal for viewing one of the 2,000 movies in his library. (He will consider selling his library with the house if the price is right.).
Arched doorways and oak accents on the stair rails and banisters are nice custom touches found throughout the home.
Upstairs are the large master bedroom and three additional bedrooms separated by a landing, which houses the ample sized linen cabinets.
The spacious master bedroom has a private balcony overlooking the back yard. The master bath has a French decor. Pale yellow and white striped wall paper accents the light blue tile surrounding the whirlpool tub, separate shower and the vanity. The fixtures, down to the crystal bath knobs are from Paris.
All of the rooms are well sized. One upstairs bedroom is currently used as an office, complete with three phone lines. All the bedrooms have ceiling fans and mirrored closets.
A dual zoned heating and air conditioning system, keeps the home warm in winter and cool in the summer. Ohmer also installed a Second Wind air purification system to keep the home allergen free. A central vacuum system is another of the homes many amenities.
An alarm system installed throughout the home detects if a door or window has been left open or unlocked. A sonar alarm for the pool sounds inside and out if anyone falls in, eliminating the need for a pool fence.
The exterior of the home is ideal for entertaining or just relaxing with the family. A free form saltwater pool and spa, (solar and gas heated) is surrounded by Utah Sunrise flagstone and stamped concrete. An Italian-style wood-burning fireplace and barbecue composed of the same flagstone are a great backdrop for an evening outdoors. The barbecue counter houses a built in refrigerator. A sound system with four hidden "rock" speakers add additional ambience. Palm trees interspersed throughout the yard are wired with lights. A putting green and grassy area on the other side of the pool complete the yard.
The three car garage accessible from a side entrance and a stairway inside the home includes a full bathroom which can be used as a pool changing room. There is an abundance of cabinet and storage space. A generator on the side of the house, powered by natural gas and propane, will start automatically if the power fails and can last for 80 hours.
