Beach Festival fees approved

The days of free admission and parking at the Port Hueneme Beach Festival are over.

Fans of the shoreline event — two days of music, food and crafts booths — will pay $3 to enter and $2 to park cars in city lots. Street parking will be free.

The Port Hueneme City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday for the changes as a way to reduce the city's subsidy of the annual bash. Councilwoman Maricela Morales was absent.

The city spent more than $49,000 to subsidize the festival in 2007. But Port Hueneme faces a chronic budget deficit, now estimated at $545,000 for this fiscal year, and growing if left unchecked.

Fees for vendor booths also will go up this year — from $50 to $75 for nonprofit agencies; from $150 to $200 for arts and crafts; from $275 to $300 for commercial operators; and from $750 to $850 for major food booths.

The city launched the festival in 1998 and made it a permanent event in 2000.

Uh, no, they won't. If you are required to pay admission and pay for parking, the majority of people will not come. There are always other festivals, in other cities from Ventura all the way to Santa Barbara, planned for the same week-end that don't charge admission, and that is where everyone will be going. The Beach Festival will unceremoniously shrivel up and die, just like Harbor Days did (and nobody even noticed).

Harbor Days was very cool. :(
