Arroyo Simi 2005 storm damage fixed
Area had been vulnerable to erosion, county official says
An emergency project to stabilize a portion of the Arroyo Simi in Moorpark that was damaged by storms in 2005 has been completed, just before this weekend's rains.
Tom Lagier, manager of the operations and maintenance division of the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, which manages the Arroyo Simi, said the major work is finished, but there is still some minor cleanup that will be completed next week.
Workers for Coastal Grading & Excavating, the contractor for the project, removed some of the construction equipment Thursday from the Beltramo Ranch Road portion of the Arroyo Simi, next to Moorpark High School and east of Tierra Rejada Road.
The damaged area is on a portion of the 12-mile Arroyo Simi, which extends from the east end of Simi Valley at Corriganville Park and into Moorpark. Many Moorpark residents use the pathway alongside this portion of Arroyo Simi to walk, jog or ride their bikes.
Officials from the Watershed Protection District said workers reconstructed an existing stabilizer — about one-fourth ton of riprap — along the sides of the arroyo. Riprap is rock cover commonly used to stabilize stream banks and protect soil from erosion in areas of concentrated runoff.
An additional one ton of riprap was added to reinforce the site. A concrete crossing that also was damaged by heavy storms was repaired. The crossing is used by residents to reach the high school.
Stabilizing the portion of the Arroyo Simi was important because the area is vulnerable to continued erosion and possible failure from large amounts of water traveling through the arroyo, Lagier said.
Lagier said an emergency schedule was established for the project because of the coming rainy season.
"It seems like we timed this perfectly before the storm," he said.
