Traffic accident and knife fight mar New Year's
The New Year saw a few incidents across the county including a knife fight in Newbury Park early Tuesday morning, a serious single car accident near Ojai and a handful of drunken driving arrests in Oxnard.
A fight in the 600 block of Kitty Street in Newbury Park shortly after 1 a.m. left three men injured, one of them with stab wounds, according to a Ventura County Sheriff's Department spokesman. Another man was treated for injuries, and a third had facial injuries. None of the injuries were life-threatening, officials said.
The names of the three were not released, nor was there any information on arrests or what triggered the altercation.
A 21 year-old Ojai woman was in critical condition Tuesday, but her baby escaped serious injury from a single-car accident the day before. For unknown reasons, Brittany Cocklin drifted off the road near 1345 W. Ojai Road about 1:45 p.m. and hit a tree, authorities said. Cocklin was taken to Ventura County Medical Center.
A beefed-up police presence in Oxnard over New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day netted nine arrests for drunken driving, officials said.
Along with the drunken drivers, police said, one juvenile was arrested for driving under the influence. The arrest means he will forfeit his license, police said.
About a dozen drivers received citations for various traffic violations, and eight unlicensed drivers had their cars towed.
