Schiffner on a roll: Retired Los Angeles Police Department sergeant John Schiffner probably didn't want to see December come to an end. The longtime Sunset Hills Country Club member made his second hole in one of the month, acing the 215-yard 17th hole at Sunset Hills with a 3-wood.
Two weeks earlier, Schiffner made an ace at Moorpark Country Club.
His latest hole in one was witnessed Clair Burrill, Dennis Roberson and Fred Yamagishi. Schiffner retired from the LAPD in 1994 and had been playing golf 3-4 days a week since then. He now has six holes in one, five of them coming at his home course at Sunset Hills.
Golf clinic: Los Robles Golf Course is offering 90-minute practice sessions for men, women and juniors for just $20 per session.
All levels of golfing ability are welcome to attend.
Similar to circuit training at the gym, these "golf workout" sessions will include six different stations of guided practice: putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play, 30-yard shots and driving.
The dates and times for juniors are: Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The dates and times for family sessions are: Thursday at noon, and Saturday at 10 a.m.
Sign up by e-mailing Sally Quinlan at Sally@vcjga.com. Or go to Los Robles and sign your name in the maroon binder behind the counter. Payment is due when you arrive for the session.
River Ridge happenings: Chad Wright and the Ventura County Junior Golf's First Tee program is holding a "Winter Break Golf Camps" at River Ridge Golf Course.
It starts today and runs through Friday. Time is 2-5 p.m. Cost is $139 and the camp will include instruction in all aspects of the game.
Call River Ridge to check on availability.
River Ridge is also hosting a tournament on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. It will be a 27-hole, Ryder Cup-format tournament at Victoria Lakes Golf Course. It will feature a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, so all competitors can be home in time to watch the big game.
Celebs set for Hope: Late-night talk-show host Carson Daly, actor Samuel L. Jackson and former major league pitcher Roger Clemens are among the celebrities who will join second-year host George Lopez at the 49th Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Jan. 14-20.
Other celebrity participants for the Classic, a desert tradition since 1960, include baseball legend Yogi Berra, former football player and TV analyst Jerome Bettis, singer Michael Bolton, musician Alice Cooper, boxer Oscar de la Hoya, sportscaster Keith Jackson, musician Kenny G and singer Huey Lewis.
Joining the celebrities will be defending champion Charley Hoffman, as well as other past champions Joe Durant (2001), Donnie Hammond (1986), Steve Jones (1989), Justin Leonard (2005) and Mike Weir (2003). Tickets are only $25 per day and are available at www.bhcc.com or by calling 1-888-672-4673.
