Suspect arrested in Oxnard shooting
From staff reports
Oxnard police last night arrested a suspect in an early morning shooting that left a man in critical condition, authorities said.
Officers from the Oxnard Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit and SWAT team arrested Hector Barragan, 24, of Oxnard, at his home about 6 p.m., department spokesman David Keith said in an e-mail.
Barragan was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and street terrorism.
He was being held this morning in lieu of $510,000 bail.
The shooting victim, Sergio Cupa, 26, of Oxnard, remained in St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard this morning. He was still in critical condition at 10 p.m. Sunday.
Cupa, who was shot in the torso, was dropped off at the hospital by two men about 2:20 a.m. Sunday after the shooting on the 1800 block of Gaucho Way.
Witnesses could give little information about the shooting or were not cooperative, police said.
Investigators determined Cupa may have been shot in front of a home where a party took place earlier in the evening.
Both Barragan and Cupa are suspected gang members, Keith said.
