Boy Scouts to collect food for hungry

More than 7,000 Boy Scouts and volunteer adult leaders will fan out across Ventura County this month to collect food for the needy as part of their annual Scouting for Food drive.

Local Boy Scouts will hand out bags and fliers in neighborhoods throughout the county. Scouts will then begin collecting food, culminating in a final pickup of food from neighborhoods on Saturday.

Any donations should be placed on doorsteps for pickup by 8 a.m. that day.

The problem of hunger is growing throughout the United States, including Ventura County, with most local food assistance agencies reporting an increased demand.

The list of most-needed items includes protein-rich foods like tuna, canned beans and peanut butter, along with cereal, juice drinks, canned foods of all types and can openers. Boxed or bagged meals and pastas are also welcome. The Scouts will not collect money or perishable items, frozen food or food in glass containers at this time.

The local food drive is part of the nationwide Good Turn for America initiative, which mobilizes the country to take a stand against hunger, homelessness and poor health.
