Girls basketball: Royal falls to athletic Jordan, 52-39
Embarking on an attempt to run the gauntlet that is the CIF-Southern Section Division I-AA girls' basketball playoffs, No. 13 seed Royal High first had to avoid being ambushed in the first round.
Easier said than done.
Long Beach Jordan proved just how tough the Division I-AA bracket is, using its length and athleticism to hand host Royal a 59 loss in the first round on Saturday night.
Royal finished the season 22-5, while Jordan improved to 17-12 and will move on to the second round.
Danesha Young led Jordan with 18 points, and Gianna Woods added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Woods' long arms on defense also presented a problem for Royal all night, neutralizing Royal's post players and suffocating point guard Erika Ward on her dribble penetration.
"I thought we prepared well to face them," said Royal coach Mike Kohl. "But they are just great athletes."
Jordan began the first quarter in a full-court press that frustrated Royal into four consecutive turnovers at one point, while Long capped a 6-0 run with a layup to make it 14-9 Jordan at the 2:17 mark.
Royal's Kaity Lykins picked off a Jordan pass and finished on a fastbreak layup with four seconds left to cut the Jordan lead to 16-13.
But Jordan's Natasha Davis banked home a 3-pointer from behind halfcourt as time expired to push the lead to 19-13.
Jordan carried that momentum into the second quarter. Long and Woods hit consecutive layups to make the score 23-13, before Ward attempted to stop the bleeding with a long 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 23-16.
The teams traded baskets before Royal went on a 7-0 run capped by a Lykins layup to make the score 27-25 with five seconds left before halftime.
But then lightning struck twice in the form of another Davis 3-pointer from halfcourt, extending Jordan's lead in back-breaking fashion at the buzzer to 30-25.
"It was disappointing to end the first quarter like that and then to have it happen again," said Kohl. "We went into halftime down five when we should have been up one."
Jordan fended off Royal's comeback attempts in the second half. The closest Royal came was 44-38 on a Kris King's layup with 4:00 left, but Jordan held Royal to a single free throw the rest of the way.
Ward finished with 16 points for Royal, hitting four 3-pointers. King added 11 points and eight rebounds.
