HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Rio Mesa's Palmer-Newton commits to Iowa school
Matthew Palmer-Newton, a senior defensive end/linebacker at Rio Mesa High, is among the college-bound Spartans who recently signed national letters of intent.
Palmer-Newton, who has signed his letter of intent with Iowa Wesleyan in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, has been awarded both an academic and a football scholarship and intends to major in history.
TENNIS
Moranda Park to host carnival next Sunday
Tennis enthusiasts will have an opportunity to get instruction from top professionals, play in a doubles round robin and demo equipment during a Tennis Carnival at Moranda Park in Port Hueneme on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Moranda Park professional Tom Worring and Tennis Academy director Mark McCampbell will provide instruction at the carnival, which will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The carnival is free and is open to beginner and adult players as well as the whole family.
There will also be an exhibition from top-ranked local junior and adult players for prizes.

BOYS' BASKETBALL
Travel team has tryouts
Tryouts for the 805 Hive, a new travel club team, will be held Wednesday from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the Royal High gym.
The club wants to have one 15-under and one 17-under team.

YOUTH BASKETBALL
Palmisano Memorial Clinic to be held Friday
The second annual Joseph Palmisano Memorial Basketball Clinic will be held on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sacred Heart School basketball courts for boys and girls in grades 3-8. Levels of instruction will be geared to skills.
Instructors will include professional basketball players and Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame members Teresa and Michelle Palmisano, high school and college coaches. Fee is $25 per participant, $40 for two participants in family, or $50 for three or more participants in family. All proceeds benefit the Joseph Palmisano Scholarship Fund that was established for needy students at Sacred Heart.
