Softball: CLU has an up-and-down day

Emily Robertson made sure the first home run at Cal Lutheran's new softball field had the maximum impact.

Robertson's second-inning grand slam highlighted a 15-hit attack as Cal Lutheran whitewashed Whittier 11-0 in the first game of its conference-opening doubleheader at CLU's Hutton Field.

But, much to the frustration of Regals coach Debby Day, the first-game effort was followed by an 10-1 loss to the Poets, leaving CLU at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Whittier is 5-3, 1-1.

"What's frustrating," said Day, "is you can see the potential we have, but we aren't able to play to our potential in every game. Right now, it seems to be the second game where we have some issues."

CLU also won the first game and lost the second in its season-opening doubleheader with Cal State East Bay.

Robertson's grand slam came with one out, after the Regals had loaded the bases with singles by Katie Strang, April Rosas and Erin Leiws, clearing the fence in straightaway center field.

"It was pretty exciting," said Robertson. "Right before I got up, (Day) just wanted me to hit it into the outfield to score a run. So when I hit it, I was excited because it was into the outfield. But then I was like, Oh, my God' and out it went."

Robertson had opened CLU's scoring with an RBI double in the first inning. She finished the first game 2 for 3 and was 4 for 7 for the doubleheader.

In all, CLU's top three hitters were 10 for 12 in the first game.

Strang and Megan Allain each added two hits in a game called after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Lizzy Chacon (2-0) was effectively wild in winning the opener, allowing just one hit, a first-inning single by Mary Pacheco. She struck out four while working around three walks and three hit batters.

In the second game, Whittier banged out 15 hits off three Cal Lutheran pitchers, blowing the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Pacheco was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Poets; Amanda Brown, Molly Yriate, Vicky Ovieda and Kellie Canida also had two hits for Whittier.
