Camarillo High's Jonathan Urango, Oxnard's Paul Montoya and Santa Clara's Daniel Garcia were CIF Northern Division Individual finalists Saturday night at Pacifica High and eight others from the area qualified for the CIF Masters Meet.
Urango, 134 pounds, was a CIF champion last year, but had to settle for second place after a 7-3 loss against Laguna Hills' Brandon Roell. Urango is 31-4 heading into the CIF Masters next Friday and Saturday at Wilmer Carter High in Rialto.
Roell is 48-3 and was a CIF finalist last season. Laguna Hills finished as the team champion with 281 points.
Oxnard finished sixth with 132 points. Montoyoa dropped a 12-7 decision to sophomore Jordan Rubio of Arroyo Grande. Oxnard has gone undefeated the past two seasons in Pacific View League dual meets.
Montoya, a senior, is 44-6 and was sixth last season in the CIF.
Montoya credits his coach Rob Vieira for his success this season.
"He pushes you to do your best and bring it," said Montoya, a four-year varsity wrestler who hopes to attend UC Santa Barbara in the fall.
The other CIF qualifiers were Channel Islands' Michael Garcia, fourth at 103; Oxnard's Jacob Anayam fifth at 103; Camarillo's Mark Robles, fourth at 112; Rio Mesa's Albert Candido, third at 125; Oxnard's Arnold Garcia, third at 130; Camarillo's Matt Hickman, fifth at 140 pounds; Hueneme's Geronimo Gonzales, third at 145; and Oxnard's Josh Manuel, fourth at 189.
Camarillo finished ninth as a team with 96 points.
Camarillo coach Ron Wilson said it's difficult to repeat as a CIF champion.
"He's had a great season and he's a hard worker," said Wilson of Urango.
Urango started his wrestling career at Hueneme High.
"He's trying to get better," said Wilson. "He'll be ready for next week."
Santa Clara's Garcia was the Tri-Valley League's upper-weight MVP.
Garcia, a junior middle linebacker and offensive guard on the CIF Northwest Division championship football team, is 13-2 this season. He was All-CIF in football.
"He missed all of December because of football," said Pedro Lozano, the wrestling coach and a Saints assistant football coach.
"He's a great student and has a lot of character," said Santa Clara principal Siobhain O'Reilly-Hill.
Garcia's brother, Robert, was a PVL champion at Hueneme in 2006.
Garcia started wrestling as a freshman when the Saints started the program. The Saints wrestled frosh-soph and JV meets. Garcia was a champion in the Dos Pueblos JV Tournament.
Camarillo's Hickman was the first freshman wrestler from his school to qualify for Masters in more than 20 years, said Wilson.
Garcia of Channel Islands was fourth, losing a 6-5 decision to Righetti's Matt Correa.
Robles of Camarillo lost by injury default.
An ankle injury prevented him from wrestling. He will be ready for the Masters, said Wilson.
