Port Hueneme police find minivan hit by gunfire by gunfire

Port Hueneme residents in the 400 block of Florence Avenue reported the sound of gunshots Thursday night, and police later found an abandoned minivan nearby with gunfire damage, police said.

The shots were heard about 9:50 p.m., and witnesses told officers that two vehicles, an older model blue minivan and a large, black SUV, sped away in different directions.

There were no gunshot victims found in the area, but several bullet casings were found on the street, according to a statement from the Port Hueneme Police Department.

Police said the minivan had sustained gunfire damage, and one of its tires appeared to have been shot out.

Fresh graffiti was also found in the area, but it is unknown if it is related to the shooting, police said.

No suspects were in custody Friday.

An investigation is continuing.

Nothing new!!!Why do cops and thugs have firearms? It goes to say that the honest citizens are the ones to have their weapons confiscated. Maybe someday CCWs will be ok'd for the good guys

Is there an "English Proficiency" requirement for the Star's proofreaders?
Or, did they mean to imply that PHPD heard additional gunfire and THAT led them to the previously shot-up minivan?
If the latter, then they left out a comma, in the headline, and didn't mention this fact in the story.
