Oak Park almost flawless in victory

The Oak Park High boys' basketball team likes nothing better than to give an opponent the runaround.

With great success, it did just that Friday night, and the result was a 63-34 win over Rolling Hills Prep in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs.

Oak Park, 20-6, advances to play Schurr in Tuesday's second round at a site to be determined. Rolling Hills Prep finishes its season at 15-10.

Oak Park's patient, perimeter-minded offense can be as much of a game of keepaway as a form of attack, and it kept Rolling Hills chasing the ball around the court for long periods until the Eagles found a shot they wanted. They didn't always make those shots — Oak Park was 20 of 50 from the field — but even the unsuccessful possessions took their toll.

"They don't have patience," said Oak Park forward Bobby Hillard, not just of Rolling Hills but opponents in general. "They don't like waiting around for us. We just take our time, (tick) off teams, and it pays off.

"Teams get really frustrated when we take our time and play our game."

Hillard led the way Friday with 16 points, but that was backed by 12 points from Samuel Levine, nine from Blake Davenport and eight each from Mitchell Halpert and Josh Marcus.

"That's us," said Oak Park coach Joey Ramirez. "We have to be patient, we have to move the ball. We've got threats, so we've got to get everybody a shot."

The multitude of scoring options was clear early as five players had at least three points as Oak Park built a 19-8 lead after one quarter.

"We've got a good club that shares the ball," said Ramirez, "passes the ball to one and other and draws guys and kicks — very unselfish. The first practice of the year, all the guys got tape and put it on their shoes that said, We not me.' And that's totally us.

"They came out in a box-and-one and tried to take Andy (Winningham) out of the game, and you saw we had other guys that can step up and make plays, and they got out of it right away." Winningham scored just three points, but with everyone scoring — and with the guard contributing eight rebounds and five assists — it hardly mattered.

"They really spread you out," said Rolling Hills Prep coach Mark Fancher, "and they do a good job of ball movement and player movement.

"I think to play against a team like that, you have to have a lot of depth. At the beginning of the game, we did a pretty good job of contesting shots and getting after them, but after a while, it wears you down."

Depth was not one of Rolling Hills' assets, as it essentially went with six players until foul trouble forced the Huskies to play two others.

Oak Park's approach takes its toll at both ends of the court, one reason Rolling Hills never scored more than nine points in a quarter and shot just 13 of 46 (28 percent) from the field.

Oak Park also dominated the boards, finishing with a 45-20 rebound advantage. There, too, the effort was spread around, with Halpert and WInningham collecting eight rebounds each, Marcus finishing with seven and Hillard grabbing six.

Spencer Palmer led Rolling Hills with nine points. Bobby Phillips had seven points and eight rebounds, and Kenny Greene scored seven before fouling out late in the third quarter.
