Camarillo charter school gets OK for next 5 years

A Camarillo public charter school still in its first year of operation received an OK Wednesday to continue for an additional five years.

The Camarillo Academy of Progressive Education, or CAPE, won its initial sponsorship in June from the Oxnard Union High School District, after being rejected by Camarillo's Pleasant Valley School District a month earlier.

This week, Oxnard Union trustees approved a five-year renewal of the school's charter petition.

The petition calls for a K-12 charter campus in Camarillo, an area included in Oxnard Union's boundary. State law requires a charter school to also serve ninth- through 12th-graders if sponsored by a high school district, which charter officials said is planned. At this time, however, the school hasn't set a timetable for adding high school students.

The school follows a similar philosophy to what Pleasant Valley's open schools had for decades — a focus that stresses parental involvement and project-based learning. The large majority of CAPE's students came from Los Senderos Open School, which Pleasant Valley trustees closed at the end of the 2006-07 school year. The move was one of several closure decisions trustees said would help the K-8 district operate more efficiently.

CAPE opened to about 350 students in classrooms, playgrounds and office space leased from First Lutheran Church of Camarillo. Officials at the K-8 school expect to move to a facility in the Pleasant Valley district this fall.

can anyone comment on the different schools in the camarillo area? Specifically, what's makes one school more attractive for a parent than the next. Thanks
