New and Now For Seniors

Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District offers a diverse program of classes and activities for seniors, age 50 and over. Most classes are held at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley. For more information on these and other classes, contact the Senior Program Recreation Coordinators (805) 583-6059 or (805) 584-4452.

A few of the fun and interesting programs currently being offered include:

Books and Movies: If you love to read books and you love movies made from books, then this is the program for you. Seniors read the selected book, attend a lively discussion of the book, then watch the movie with the group. On February 25, the book will be Under the Tuscan Sun. The group will meet from 7:00-10:30 pm at the Simi Valley Senior Center. The facilitator will be from Friends of the Library. A registration fee of $2 will cover refreshments and the movie rental.

A movie location walking tour of Corriganville Park, 7001 Smith Road, Simi Valley, will be held on Saturday, February 23 from 10:00 am 12:00 pm. The guest presenter will be Greg Anderson who will share memories of the great western movies and television shows filmed at the site. Please wear hiking boots or comfortable shoes; no sandals or open-toed shoes. The registration fee is only $5.00.

Ikbana II is a class in Japanese flower arranging, a technique that is practiced and enjoyed by millions of people world wide. Ikebana taps the beauty and simplicity of flower arrangements to complement your home or office. Participants will use fresh flowers, dried branches, leaves and creativity. Bring pruning or gardening scissors and a $20 materials fee to the first class. The registration fee is only $5 and the class will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 5:00-7:00 pm at the Simi Valley Senior Center by instructor Yasue McCormick.

All classes require advance registration. To register, contact Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District (805) 584-4400, sign up online at www.rsrpd.org, or sign up at the Simi Valley Senior Center.
