Cornerstone's Compassionate Car Wash
When the third graders from Cornerstone Christian School heard that a couple of their fellow classmates' families were facing expensive medical bills, they sprang into action and devised a plan. What, they wondered, could they do that would encompass raising money and getting everyone together while at the same time allowing for the possibility of a bit of mischief? A car wash seemed the perfect fit, and indeed it was.
On a beautiful Saturday, February 9th, several dry families gathered in the school parking lot armed with nozzles, sponges, towels, and sunscreen. After a brief lecture from parents to their children about the importance of utilizing a proper aim while in charge of the hose, the car wash began.
Relatives, friends, and strangers heeded the call of the chanting third graders. "CAR WASH! CAR WASH! CAR WAAAAASH!" rang the persistent bellowing on Arneill Road. One by one drivers obliged until the cars snaked around the lot. Undaunted, the washers kept washing, and the dryers kept drying. Throughout the day, fresh batches of volunteers arrived to relieve soaked and soggy parents until hours later the last sparkling car drove away.
At the end of the day the cash box swelled from the generosity of all who participated. However, money was not the only thing acquired from this day. Priceless lessons were learned about the attainable accomplishments available when people work together, the importance of sticking with a task, and also the tremendous joy and personal pride gained by helping others.
