CLU begins events for Black History Month
From poetry to art, a number of activities this month at California Lutheran University will commemorate Black History Month.
Tributes begin with HEROES (Honoring Excellence Regardless of Ethnic Stigmas) figurines, displayed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the Soiland Humanities Building. Lawrence Lee of Oxnard assembled the collection of dolls and information as a tribute to people who have furthered the advancement of their ethnic, racial or gender groups through acts of heroism, patriotism and courage during military service.
A Black Student Union team will compete against a faculty and administrator team during the Fourth Annual Black History Month Super Quiz at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Student Union Building.
Paula L. Woods, author of the Charlotte Justice series, will speak on "The Mystery Genre: The Rise of the Ethnic Detective" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in Lundring Events Center. She will also lead a Creative Writing Workshop at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 in the Roth Nelson Room.
The Black Student Union and The Word poetry journal will host CLU's first Black History Month Poetry Slam at 8 p.m. Feb. 29 outside the Student Union Building. Original works and tributes to established poets that honor African-American leaders and heroes will be read.
