School shooting at E.O. Green
Parents wait for kids to be released from Oxnard's E.O. Green middle school after a student was arrested for shooting another student in a classroom.Watch now »
An eighth-grade boy shot in the head by a classmate today in the first attack of its kind in a Ventura County school was in serious condition but improving as the day drew to a close, authorities said.
The shooting occurred in a computer lab at E. O. Green School at 3739 South C St. in Oxnard shortly after students arrived at school.
About 24 students were in the lab working on projects for their English class when a boy in the class shot and wounded a classmate.
Other students in the class identified the victim as Lawrence King and the shooter as Brandon McInerney. Police would not confirm the names but said both were 15.
News of the attack traveled rapidly as students used their cell phones to call and text message parents and one another. Long before the school notified parents, dozens were standing outside the yellow police tape that cordoned off the school, waiting for information about the shooting and when their children would be released.
The 15-year-old boy, reported to be in serious condition, was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and was being treated in its intensive care unit, police said.
Several dozen officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the junior high school after receiving a report that a student had been shot.
The suspect ran off campus after the shooting but was apprehended nearby, police said.
Police said it appeared to be an isolated incident between the two students. The students apparently had an ongoing dispute, including an argument Monday, other students said.
The shooting happened during a first-period English class meeting in the school's computer lab. About two dozen students and their teacher had walked to the lab, where one of the eighth-graders then shot a classmate, said Jerry Dannenberg, superintendent of the Hueneme School District.
School officials called 911 and the campus went into lockdown, with students being kept inside their classrooms.
Once they got the OK from police, school officials began allowing parents onto campus one-by-one to pick up their children. Hundreds of parents flocked to the campus, some after getting calls and text messages from their children still inside their classrooms.
City officials and clergy were speaking with parents at the school, both in English and Spanish. They told parents that 25 students--apparent witnesses--were being interviewed by police inside the school but the rest would be released.
Students could only be released, however, to a person listed on an emergency contact information card.
Several parents waiting in line said they were shocked that a shooting had occurred at E. O. Green, which they described as a safe school.
"I think it's one of the most secure schools in Oxnard," said Rosa Piña, 38, whose son is a sixth-grader at the school. A relative had called her this morning, telling her that something had happened at the school.
Piña called her son on his cell phone right away. He let his mother talk to his teacher, who reported that all of the students in his class were OK.
Giovanni Guiterrez, 13, was in his first-period math class when the campus announced the lockdown. He said students sent text messages to friends in other rooms, trying to find out information about what had happened.
Janie Vargas and Jamie Olivares walked off campus late this morning, holding onto their 12-year-old son walking between them. "I just hope the child who got hurt is OK," Janie Vargas said.
District officials reported that classes will resume Wednesday at E.O.
Green, and a crisis team and counselors will be on campus to help students and employees. Because of the shooting, the district canceled a regional spelling bee scheduled to be held this afternoon at Blackstock School.
Educators also asked parents to look out for signs that their children might need help dealing with the shooting, saying they have a list of community agencies that could provide assistance. For more information, contact the E. O. Green school office at 986-8750 or http://eogreen.huensd.k12.ca.us.

I went to that school many years ago and my son was there last year. Thank God he wasn't there. I refuse to let my son go to Hueneme High because it is just plain bad. I think the police department really needs to get down on these criminals and the community needs to take their neighborhood back by reporting all crimes.

I live in Oxnard and this city seems to be invested with crimes such as these. Just over the weekend two young teenage boys were walking through Camino Del Sol Park in middle of the day and where approached by 4 teens that pulled out a knife, but lucky the police had a undercover unit by and arrested all 4 teens. Now, this is a great idea by the Oxnard Police by having a under cover unit. If it wasn't for that unit, we might have read about two more victims this past weekend.
Where are parents here? Maybe they work 12-14 hour days, but that does not mean you cannot parent your own children. And where in God's name does a 15 year old get a hand gun nowadays? This is very sad to hear this, imagine the other students that witness this shooting and what they are going threw. The Oxnard police is doing a good job with these under cover units and need to be funded to have more of them. As for me, I just stay home and avoid going out, unless I leave the city.

EthicalPerson, Hotwild flower meant that the 15 y.o. is the victim yet he is still in school and since he is the victim, we should not be attacking him...
Hotwildflower, I really doubt that the parents said 'if someone disrespects you, shoot them,' that is just insane. no matter how bad of a parent one is, no one will ever say to deal with problems by shooting them.

yes, the 15 year old is the victim...
I am guessing that the person who did the shooting was probably the product of gang mentality parents, so that is why I mentioned the "disrespect" part of it. They have kids and raise them to view things in the skewed sense of reality as they see things.
If the person who did the shooting wasn't a gang member and had great parents and was just a disturbed child, I apologize for the assumption, but considering the area...I think my assumption is probably right on.

My daughter went to EO Green for Jr. High, and based on her experiences there, I also refuse to allow her to attend Hueneme High. In the late 80's my oldest son attended EO Green, it once was a distinquished school, with the 'classroom of the future'. (He graduated from Hueneme High, class of 93, but those days are gone.)
I feel sad for the administrators at EO Green. They try very hard to keep the school safe for the kids, but are fighting a losing battle. Prayers for all involved, the shooting victim, the administration and teaching staff, and the young students, their school memories will be forever effected by this event.

You cannot assume that the parents are into gangs! The majority of the gang members who live in my neighborhood have parents that are from Mexico, just ignorant (of our culture and language) and hard working mexican people. Their kids don't have enough supervision, are usually born in the US and they walk all over their parents, have no respect. Yes, parents can help by parenting, but when you work 14 hours a day it is EXTREMELY hard to supervise older kids.
What alarms me is the relative ease that people in Oxnard have regarding obtaining firearms. There are shootings all the time and that is extremely alarming. Gun control is a big problem in Oxnard and youth, who have too little impulse control, have access to guns when they should not. I was reading a study about young kids and teenagers who commit serious crimes and the majority of them would probably NOT have committed the crime were the weapons not so easily accessed. The reason is that teenagers have poor impulse control, even if they are raised in good families, they still lack the ability to think first and act later; they react. If we want to help reduce crimes that involve guns, laws need to be tougher and not just in Oxnard but in the bigger cities like LA, where gun crime is even more prevalent and guns are easier to get and take to smaller cities.

Gun control may have worked if there wasn't already millions of guns within America. At this point all gun control does is makes the law abiding citizens disarm. The criminals will always be able to find guns.

hotwildflower...if you packed up and ran away, where would you go? Incidents like these happen in every town in America. Just watch the news and see the parents standing outside of Any School USA, hoping that their child is not one of the victims. We need to STOP blaming the parents and look at the big picture! There is a saying, "It takes a whole village to raise a child" Yes, there are bad parents, but most parents struggle to raise and support their families and do the best they can. What are we, as a country willing to do to stop the violence that touches our children every day? Are we willing to go to the street corners, where gangs hang out and challenge them? Are we willing to take to the streets and openly condemn violence and gangs in our neighborhoods? Are we willing to say, "We see you and we will report you!" Are we willing to give of our time to provide alternative activities for our children to keep them from drifting to deviant behavior? Or do we do like jay3777, and just avoid going out?! I, like many others have devoted my life to fighting crime, but I also know that unless the citizens take a stand and say "enough!" then our battle will be endless...just my $.02

"Several parents waiting in line said they were shocked that a shooting had happened at E. O. Green, which they described as a safe school."
Why are they shocked? Look at the element that has moved in and virtually taken over the area: Mexican immigrants are causing the crime statistic to go up and the ones that do make it here have children with no morals, ethics and seemingly have no boundaries of behavior attached to them, not to mention any element of cleanliness.
Whatever happened to common decency? It's pretty much gone to wherever decent people have gone to because it definitely isn't here - I challenge anybody to show different.
And before anybody goes off on this: I AM Hispanic, but I'm not proud of it because of all of this stupid immature crap that goes on. Get a grip, people - because our current civic reps apparently aren't doing anything else except keeping their own areas green and clean.

What do you mean "considering the area"? I mean, considering the area, I am guessing the shooter was gang related. Not that all shooters are gang members and not that all gang members are shooters. That also does not mean everyone in that area is a gang member, but there is a significant population of them there.
I do blame the parents because I have two of my own, I have a child in 8th grade and I can assure you, I know where he is at all times and I have talked to him about guns, violence, sex, drugs and every thing else. I am not saying he is perfect and will never make a mistake, but we are off to a good start with him not going out and shooting anyone.
If you aren't able to care for your children, raise them properly and take the time to teach them right from wrong...Don't have them!!!!

From what i have been told, the victim today, had been bullying the (shooter) all year long. For whatever reasons the bullying took place, killing isnt the answer. Its a shame we as parents can't read our children better, or just sense something is going on with our childs lives. And then when we do find out, its really to late.
Yeah, shootings happen everywhere. But when its in your own backyard, it hits home. I lived in Hueneme, went to school at E.O Green, in fact a family member works there now.
Lucky I moved away before I could expose my children to this plague that covers ventura county. I really love the area that I was born and raised in VC, but times have changed I guess. So sad.

We all make choices in life that isn't necessarily a result of how our parents raised us. Each and every one of us was given "free will". Not all violent children are the result of bad parenting! There are a lot of assumptions being made here and it seems the focus isn't where it should be. A 15 YEAR OLD LOST HIS LIFE TODAY!! Odds are his Mom said goodbye to him as he went out the door, or even as she dropped him off at school never dreaming that it would be the last time. Did she remember to say "I Love You" or were they too rushed. None of us really know the answers. Please take a moment to focus on that and maybe just for a while stop the mud slinging and say a little prayer for the families involved and the students at the school who have to relive this in their minds for a long time.

Having worked at a Jr.High school in Oxnard, the track that had the best behaved students, BY FAR, was the track with ALL immigrants from Mexico. This fact was discussed often between co workers because the behavioral differences were so extreme compared to the other 3 tracks that consisted of U.S born students. The immigrant children were so well behaved, and respectful, to all staff members and students, they won over my respect. Please do not turn this into racial issues! Pray for All children. That is what they are, children

hotwildflower do you live in the area in question? Is this how you know it is gang infested? Did you see the parents picking up their children from E.O.Green? Did they look like parents who would raise gang members? If life has taught me anything at all, it is never to judge, especially if you have children. By the way, I graduated from E.O.Green many years ago, and lived in that school district for over 20 years. Me and my children (who also went to Hueneme School District schools)are all productive citizens in this community. And I still live in Oxnard, for over 30 years now.

i'm saddened by the news of today. i worked at e.o. green many years ago. it is a fine school.
i also agree with srascon about the behavior of immigrant students. i've taught eld in various schools in the oxnard/pt. hueneme area and have always found the mexican-born students to be the best behaved and most willing to learn. it's a joy to teach them.
as for warpkat, that person's logic is very warped! how can you make a blanket statement that mexican immigrants have no morals or ethics? that's a ridiculous statement. the lack of morals or ethics is not ethnic/national specific. have you internalized the racism you grew up with so much that you believe these lies people told you about yourself? and to believe that mexican immigrants are the cause for the rise in crime? frankly, i cannot believe that you would even have the audacity to spout such ignorant, hateful views. what a shame.

GUNS, GUNS, when are we going to wake up and get these gun, all guns off the street. A shooting in Oxnard, one in New Orleans, and all over the place. Until we wake up and get guns off the street we will continue to have the shooting. The NRA says we have a right to carry guns, NO WAY. that is not what the constutition says. It does not say we have a right to carry a hand gun. It says that the right to have a gun as a member of a well orginized Milita is a right. We sure keep looking bad to the rest of the world with all of the guns.
Time for some of our leaders to show some guts and get rid of all these guns. No way an 18 year old should ever be able to own a gun.
STOP all the killings and get the guns off the streets.

Why are people saying that they would not let their children go to Hueneme High school? I went to both E.O. Green and Hueneme High school and I think that both have a great enviroment for students and a caring staff. It's not the schools' fault that things like this happen.
How bout this for a fact: when I was at Hueneme, we hardly had any fights, while Oxnard High had fights almost every two weeks? CIseems to have has those "popular" groups that think they're better than everyone. Yet, all of these schools nuture us and try to do the best for us. The schools aren't perfect, but they're not run up with gang members an crazy students, the way some people are percieving them to be.
Why don't you go talk to you kids and tell them to get better friends? That's the real problem, they probably hang out with stupid people that pressure them into idiotic actions. My experiences at both of these schools were great cuz I hung out with good hearted kids, not stuck up know it alls that are easily influenced by "cliques" that television portrays.
I'm praying for the best for the victim(s) and the families involved... Hopefully the shooter is punished, but also taken care of.

Yes, 15 yr's old is technically a "child"...I have had a few run-in's with these so called "children"...been cursed out and had a group of them stand in front of my car so I could not pass..these "children" have no fear or respect for adults, I was personally afraid for my safety and the safety of my kids who have to go to school with them. Parents need to wake up and smell the coffee, if you have to work 14 hrs a day to pay the bills why are you having all these kids? Why are there so many girls under 20 with 2 and 3 kids? (I know several), they think its a normal way to live having kids with one guy then breaking up and getting with another. These kids need parents and guidance but once they start strapping on a gun all sympathy goes out the window.

I just knew some knee-jerk reactionary would show up saying ban all the guns. Would you be saying ban all the knives if it was a stabbing or ban all the cars if a car was used? The weapon used is not the issue, the desire to do this is the issue.
Do we as a society value life so little that we will destroy it for as little as a nasty look, a harsh word, a GF/BF that rejects you, having a different skin color, etc, etc?

The biggest faults here lie with poor parenting skills and the failure of our school system in allowing the bully/victim dynamic to escalate to the point where a child feels his only course of action is violence, as well as a culture that immunizes its citizens to brutality by repeated exposure through television, movies and video games.
I don’t think that gun control in the city of Oxnard has much to do with the crime rate. Statistics show that the majority of guns used in crimes are obtained illegally and the preponderance of individuals involved in school shootings take weapons from family members who have not properly secured their guns, as in the school shootings in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Paducah, Kentucky and Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

srascon: No, I do not live in the area, although I did. I spent many years in Oxnard attending Ramona elementry as well as Haycox, which probably attributes to my distaste for the area. I lived there and was bullied, yet I didn't respond with violence, I was fortunate enough to move out.
However, as I mentioned above, not everyone in Oxnard is a gang member...I already conceded that fact. Not every gang member shoots and not every shooter is a gang member, I figured that pretty much covered it all. Regardless of this shooters ethnicity, he was wrong and reacted in the worst possible way and we have a tradegy.
I am sorry, I made a generalization which obviously offended you, but the facts are...there is a large number of gang members in that area and Oxnard as a whole. It's just a shame. There was a time when Oxnard was nice.

this is a sad thing, and upsetting in the fact that our society has digressed (sp?) to this. There a lot of factors that can make someone think that shooting someone is the 'answer'. For a teen to do it, I can't help but think that the video games that are out don't desensitize them to shooting/killing. When I was a kid, back before video games and even color tv, we played cops and robbers with cap guns; the cartoon characters always shot each other with shotguns or chased the mean character with a knife, and we thought nothing about it. But I don't remember kids killing kids with guns/knives in my childhood/teenhood, because it was cartoon characters doing it, and we all knew cartoons weren't real.
I think we as a society are also victims in this shooting today, and I feel sorry for us all.
Peace and hugs to all who need it...

I hate how people think oh my kid went here its better or what not. I went to Hueneme High, graduated in 04 and it is not a bad school. So to all the people who think it is, take a look at the other schools. Pacifica is full of colonia kids and its not that great of a school. Unless you attended that school, you should not judge it. Because parents don't control their kids, accidents like these happen. Dont put blame on the schools, blame the kids and their parenting. This could have been prevented easily

hotwildflower you did not offend me. Usually people who have bad experiences in life choose to get away from them. In your case you chose to move. I'm curious, who do you consider gang members? The way they dress, act, who they hang out with? Just the other day a group of 4 or 5 boys were hanging out by a restraunt that me and my daughter went to. She waited for me outside, one of the boys stroke up a conversation with her. I warned her she should be careful because the boys were dressed like "cholos". She looked at me strangely and said, no, they were just ordinary guys. Well, that reminded me of the old saying, dont judge a book by its cover. Not only that, kids dont dress the way they did when I was in school.

srascon, I don't judge them as a whole, I grew up in the area and while some may appear to be in a gang, I know some of them are great people. Unfortunately, if you look a certain way, regardless of who you are on the inside, you will be treated as you appear...it is just how society works.
Honestly, the issue at hand is that a child was shot, regardless of what lead up to it...we had a horrible event happen right here.
Parents need to be held accountable, plain and simple.

Its so sad to know that ppl are having kids and dont really care to the extent that they should. I had a kid when I was 20 yrs old, and I followed thru as well. It does get tuff. I ended up having 2 more kids, but I man'd up, and I am taking care of my kids. I will make sure I do homework with my daughter. I will make sure I spend the quality time that my kids need. I will make sure that we as a family will interact as a family. We should all love each other like bro's and sister's. Love thy neighbor. Alot has to do with parents, but in some cases, things just happen...

Its not that parents are not spending enough time with there kids. Because its not like oxnard is full of high paying jobs so most parents have to work longer hours to support these kids. And there needs to be more things for kids to do like sports. the colonia gym has a great boxing program and there is sports all across the city. Its up to the city to find somthing that will make these kids interested in these sports. And possibly make them more affordable.

The fact that this shooting occurred in “Oxnard” as opposed to any other city in the county has no relevance. The reality is that this type of violence can happened in any community, regardless of race or affluence. The population of Columbine is 94% Caucasian and has a median income that is $20K more per year than Ventura and Santee, California (where there was a school shooting in 2001 that resulted in two dead and thirteen wounded) has a median income $25K higher than Ventura.

This kid woke up, brought a gun to school for the purpose of committing murder. The system let him bring the gun onto campus in order to attempt to commit murder. The School should be sued for improper security in allowing an armed student to be on their campus. Allowing children to dress up like their favorite criminal is not in society's best interest. School uniforms should be mandatory, metal detectors should be mandatory, removal of students with gang affiliations and mutilations should be mandatory. You must have Zero Tolerance, gang members should be subject to being pressed into service like the Alaskan Youth Authority. Their families have failed, their peers have failed, and they themselves have failed. They need to learn social skills and be off the street, into a service where they can learn how to make an honest dollar and respect their peers and teammates. Once these wayward kids have been pressed, their families should be forced to pay out of pocket a portion of their income.. MANDATORY in order to help defray the costs of their wayward child. Also these non-parents, they should be forced to be sterilized or face prison.

ThePredator008, how you can you justify El Rio High School having no shootings when somebody was just killed in El Rio a few days ago? Even though it wasn't at a school, it was still a homicide nonetheless. I'm so sick of everybody saying this could have happened anywhere and how Oxnard shouldn't be singled out. It's not like this is the ONLY incident that has ever happened in Oxnard. It's just ONE of MANY stupid and senseless acts of violence that seem to only be occuring in Oxnard. Yes, there is crime in other areas, but not to the extent of Oxnard. Something needs to be done! And for those who say Oxnard is bigger therefore this is more crime, that is the wrong attitude. When you look at crime rates which allow you to compare apples to apples, Oxnard always has a higher crime rate than it's neighboring cities in Ventura County AND Los Angeles. It only seems to be getting worse!...In the meantime families will continue to lose family members to morons who act out with guns and knives. May God Bless the victim in this case!

Hotwildflower: Unfortunately, because these are kids, they dress the way their peers dress, they dont care how society thinks of them, peer pressure is very strong. We should remember how it was when we were that age so that we can do what we can to help these kids. Smile at them, encourage them, maybe even show them a better way. You dont have to be their parent to do these things, just a human being. Since we are adults, lets pray for these kids, we dont know what they are going through, even in their own homes. The majority grow up to be people just like us, it's the minority that do something horrible like shoot someone. Maybe the parents saw a sign, maybe they didn't.

I am sure the kid was just showing the gun to a friend and it accidentally went off. Why are we so quick to blame gangs. Gangs are a way for the youth of America to feel like they belong to a real family. I'll bet the shooter will say he didn't know the gun was loaded. He was intoxicated, he was disrespected, he felt bullied or threatened. I can't wait for the bleeding hearts to come out of the woodwork like the c---roaches you are. If the child dies, the shooter should be executed on PPV TV. The proceeds can go to the victims family. Maybe he can be rehabilitated because he is under 17.

School uniforms are not the answer.
EO Green has school uniforms. And the teachers have to spend alot of time and energy enforcing the uniform policy. The kids find ways of identifying with their cliques, for example, color of shoelaces. Then it was socks. The uniform policy is constantly being changed, updated, and amended to address and correct all the various ways the students find of expressing themselves.
EO Green felt like a prison for my daughter, with the strict uniform discipline. She felt she was being punished for just being a teen in Oxnard. It was not an easy situation. Uniforms are NOT a panacea. It got to be really silly, and a waste of time and energy. Rules for the sake of rules. Obviously, school uniforms didn't stop this shooter.
Maybe if the administration didn't pressure the teachers to constantly be enforcing the uniform policy, they would have noticed something was bothering the student that boiled over and shot another child. Or maybe they might have noticed the gun?

First and fore most we need to pray for both the families. I have lived here for 6 years and it seems that everyone is just so angry. I think as a community we should all pull together and make our city a nice one. We should be there for one another and work together on all these issues and there are many. We as parents of all ages need to to be supportive of our children by being a part of what they are doing and how we all talk to each other. We are the examples and for some reason we get to busy and make our children last. Yes we need to work and pay bills but we need to be families again also. That is so important. I talked to a young boy who was failing at Hueneme high school and I talked a bit to him and he seemed very hard and tough. Well it turned out that he felt his parents did not care because they were to in to themselves and did not make sure if he went to school or gave him praise when he did good. I made a promise to him and I told him you bring up your grades and graduate I will bring you home made cookies every week. And let me say he did and is very successful now. He thanked me and asked why do you care I am not your son. I told him I do care I have kids your age and I want all of our children to do right by themselves. A little bit of caring and honesty and just showing someone that they mean something can make a big difference in so many. This incident should of never happened but what was that child's home life like? Thats the question where and who are the parents and what is going on in the home for that poor child to do such a cold hearted act to someone else?? We need to keep all our prayers going for both families!

Victims have been of every race, not just Mexicans, not just gang members, not just poor people. This situation is truly sad for everyone involved. We have to remember that there are so many children who are going to be affected by this. We also need to remember that there are two kids today that will be affected for the rest of their lives. Their parents and family will be affected for the rest of their lives. We need to say a prayer for all of them. My heart is broken because this is my community, too.

This is a sad story and it does make one question parenting, but blaming an illegally obtained gun and wanting more laws makes no sense. Only law abiding citizens are buying and registering them legally, so new laws are only affecting them. Criminals, well most anyway, aren't stupid enough to go to a gun shop and let them do a background check. Also, Japan's homicide rate is almost as high as the US, and there is NO legal gun ownership there. The sad fact is, violence is part of human nature, and people will still keep killing other ppl, as they have for millenia. I don't get it either, no, it's not right, and it's getting worse. I'm female/LifeNRA, and I reserve the right to defend myself, because the cops can't be everywhere. I never want to have to exercise that right.

"My nephew was shot as a rookie cop in Oxnard years ago"
I am pretty sure cops were allowed to carry guns back then as well.

rcamacho- Do you know the story behind it? My mother works at the school along with other kids I know. This guy was a bully. I was just saying that its so easy to take the side of the victim. By all means do I agree with the shooter, he must pay for his crime.
Thanks for pointing out your nephew. My uncle was murdered 1 block away from his house in Oxnard. By a gang member. In front of his girlfriend at that.
dude you make no sense to what I was talking about. Im pretty sure your nephew was innocent, and doing is job like he was told to do. But you got idiots like the person who shot your nephew, that have no respect for the law.
we are talking about 2 different situations.

People say that it can happen any where, and that is correct. But it is the same kinds of people that do it, NOW thats the problem. We know it, you know it, but nothing is really done about it. Where do you begin? Its like mold infesting our lives it crawls and creeps over the edges of the cheese and keeps on coming. Stop the people Stop the crime. My god do something with the child that did the shooting and my god help the child that was shot. Watch out for the retaliation.

I meant to say, I DO NOT agree with what the shooter did. He must be punished.

It is all true....but how can you stop a child when you cannot understand the situation...most of these shooters are solitary in their plans, and only tell a staunch few; not everything can be stopped, and unfortunately, today, it did not.

READ ME!!! I know both kids. I graduated last year. I used to hang out with the shooter (Brandon McInerny) all the time. He used to kick our a**es in wrestling all the time. He'd always get into problems and fights 24/7. I'm not surprised that he would do something like that but WHY BRING A GUN??!!!! This guy is big. He can beat up anyone in the school. Beat the kid up but dont kill him! I also was aquaintences with the shootee (Lawrence King) I heard the kid was homosexual. My friends always use to tease him about that last year. But i wasnt an ass to him. The kid is quiet and calm. I dont see why to kill him. THat school is gonna suck now!!!!!

the boy is a bisexual transgender....why hurt someone for that? keep your hate to yourself...talk to a friend, a parent, a counselor.....OBVIOUSLY, some people do not use resources and connections well...at all.

Im just sorry for what both parents and the children that witnessed this event will have to live with.
Ppl can get heated over this situation just as easy as I can. And its so easy to blame something or somebody. but in reality, we all have a choice of how we want to live and act.

I have read most of the above comments and many of them are based on ignorance and ignorance breeds hate and hate leads to acts such as this one. Educate yourselves and the youth in your lives.
My family has been calling Oxnard home for about 100yrs now and because of that news travels quickly between all of us....
The indivdual who shot the child is from Silver Strand. What his race is? That's irrelevant.
Some of the children have been saying that the child was shot due to his sexual orientation. Again, this so far is not a fact just what is being said by the children.

My nephew sat next to the victim and seen what happened, according to him and other students it was a problem over the victims sexuality and telling the shooter that he loved him...

buttpirate should you really be posting the names of the children involved, if those are the true names? Have a little respect for the familys involved. Even if you do know more about the situation then most of us. I'm sure the parents of the children involved don't want you posting the names online for all of Ventura County to read.

To buttpirate...I'm sorry that you felt personally attacked by my comment...but if you will take notice we were actually typing at about the same time ( my submission was delayed by a phone call). Also I typed "MANY" not "ALL" comments were ignorant...and I too knew of the individuals names but being that they are minors I was not going to reveal them...there a legal issues in progress...Again don't make this about Race/ethnicity...And Beating up the child is not a solution either...if I had to choose between getting punched or shot of course I would choose to be punched, BUT niether one should occur... Also, just because it was your friends who teased the individual and NOT you, doesn't make it better, unless you tried stopping your freinds.

Buttpirate, you have no right to list any names on this site. All involved still have a right to privacy, and families probably still need to be notified. I just wish kids these days would learn to respect life, and respect each other. Does not matter who did what or why or what race they are....just respect each other and respect the life that God graced you with.

I feel that all humanity has a lesson here before them, and that is to learn to be humble, kind, compassionate, love one another as a human being, not where they come from. I feel that all humanity needs to learn spirituality and to love with unconditional love, God bless everyone.

I'm so used to hearing about this kind of stuff in Oxnard that I almost didn't even read the article. Now I wish I hadn't.

all those still reading comments please go to BUTTPIRATES comment and click suggest removal, so the individuals names are removed... I realize that Oxnard is a small town and it may still get around...but the less the better...

What is a 15 yr. old bisexual transgender doing in a jr. high school? Sounds like both the shooter and the victim needed intervention and therapy long ago. And maybe they shouldn't have been in a mainstream classroom.

bitbruja,
All the gang shootings and knife fights going on in these schools and you're worried about is a bisexual transgender kid? Are you kidding me? This kid's not hurting anybody. He was the victim.
buttpirate (nice name),
You say, "Mexicans just beat you up in groups." And who do you think has done 99.9% of the shootings in Oxnard? Uh, that would be Mexican gang members. But they also beat people up in groups because they're cowards.

Does it matter if the victim is or is rumored being a transexual? Who cares. It doesn't give the shooter the right to shoot him!!
Why would you question why the victim was in school? Sad comment bruja.

I've been trying to get the comment by buttpirate removed since it was posted. So far no response from the Star. I just notified the PIO at Oxnard PD so we'll see if the Star responds.

The question is not "what was this individual doing in school?" Its "why can we not accept eachother?" no individual should be judged by the way they dress or who they choose to date/love/like/etc. Being a LGBT is not a disorder and does not need Therapeutic interventions however I do beleive that many people need educational interventions so that it is finally understood by all that being an LGBT is OK, being an LGBT is not a crime, its not wrong, and its not a choice its just who you are. And if your personal beliefs convey otherwise, I have no choice but to accept that but please don't hurt, judge or ostracize LGBT's and thier supporters. Just the same way I wouldn't behave in a hateful manner towards those who beleive being LGBT is wrong.
LGBT's are exactly the same as Heterosexuals...HUMAN BEINGS who deserve respect.

bitbruja - I am amazed at your comment. Why wouldn't he be in school? As for his age, possibly he was held back a year, or his parents started him a little later for their own reasons. Not really something for us to spend too much time speculating on. As for his "assumed" sexuality - first off - No one even knows what is true about his sexual preference - could be rumors! Second - IF it is true, that is not a reason to ban a child from school. INTERVENTION & THERAPY??? A persons sexual preference is not an illness that must be cured. That is a very uninformed and dare I say, ignorant comment!
Please, people, just remember that tragically two young men's lives were changed FOREVER today. Not to mention their friends and families. Stones should be left outside in the garden of our glass house! Oh and before you ask. No, I am not homosexual, just open minded and accepting of those who accept themselves for who they are.

Lovels - I understand your point and those with hearts & human compassion also understand. BUT there are many heartless people in this world with pure hate toward others. THere are many issues I don't agree with everyday but I don't make the decision to go out and try to kill people because of my views.
Pray for the victim. If anything, he needs support and prayers. His family too.

I work at Frank Jr. High in Oxnard and when we found out about this, we were all shocked and scared for our students. I personally am outraged that this happened at such a young age. How this can happen, it is ridiculous that children are able to get their hands on stuff like that. I pray that the student that was shot gets well and i feel for the family!!

Sad to hear bout this. Oxnard is not what it used to be. I commend the E.O. Green school for having the proper procedures and going into lock down. Things can happen, and being prepared is the best way to handle them.
It was mentioned the boys had a argument on Monday-did anyone think to tell the school or parents to handle the situation.
Kids need life skills and we have all been told even if some
