Brush fire extinguished

Firefighters early Monday extinguished a small brush fire in the Ventura River bed, authorities said.

Ventura city and county firefighters found the blaze about 12:50 a.m. when they responded to the riverbed near the Main Street bridge in Ventura, authorities said.

It took firefighters about 90 minutes to put out and mop up the 1,000-square-foot blaze, which apparently stemmed from a fire set by some homeless people at an encampment to stay warm, authorities said.

Police located five homeless people in the area, but no one was cited or arrested, police said. No one was injured in the fire.
