The Thousand Oaks Chapter of Business Networking International (BNI) has adopted a female whale shark. The adoption was arranged by Iemanya Oceanica, a non-profit organization, dedicated to the conservation of sharks, rays and their habitats. "Each year more than 100 million sharks are killed, which puts them in danger of becoming extinct. Sharks play a vital role in ocean ecology. They help keep the oceans healthy, for which we all benefit," said Laleh Mohajerani, executive director for Iemanya Oceanica.

The BNI chapter named their adopted shark Maya, which means dream and illusion. Maya measures 11 meters long and it turns out, she is possibly pregnant, judging from the appearance of her bulging pelvic area. The members of the chapter generously donated $1500 to adopt Maya, which covers the costs associated with tagging a shark. "We are thankful to BNI for their remarkable donation and firm commitment to the protection of our oceans," said Mohajerani.

Scientists James T. Ketchum, Alex Hearn and A. Peter Klimley traveled to Darwin and Wolf Islands, part of Galapagos to tag Maya with a signature ultrasonic coded tag. "By tagging sharks, we are able to monitor their activity and track their whereabouts," said Mohajerani. "This information provides knowledge that will assist us with designing more effective efforts and ways for conservation.

Through Iemanya Oceanica's Adopt a Shark program, individuals may adopt a shark for as little as $50. The adoption package includes an official Certificate of Adoption, T-shirt, postcards, stickers, bumper sticker and a free newsletter subscription. It's the perfect gift for the person who has everything. For more information about Iemanya Oceanica's Adopt a Shark program visit the Web site at www.adoptashark.com.
